The Gentleman Soldier

Post Sat Jan 26, 2008 11:49 pm

Does anyone have any memories of hearing The Gentleman Soldier live sometime in the 80's when Shane's voice was not so tainted (or slurred) as it has become over the years? I can only imagine how awesome and hilarious a performance of that song would have been performed in it's prime.

That's a loaded question. The Gentleman Soldier had a very short life on stage precisely because the number called for it to be sung in a cord-shredding falsetto.

He does fuck it up on the "Live At Montreux" DVD with the Popes, which is obviously a bit later. It's not the best bit of the gig... though to be fair it must be an absolute bugger of a song to sing at the best of times.

There is a great clip on YouTube of the Boston Opera House Sept. 1989
performance aka "Lyric Sheet plastered to Shane's Crotch".

http://youtube.com/watch?v=WgjeyimEReM

This was a great show. However, when I emailed this clip to one
of my buddies, he said; "Jeez, I thought I was dreaming that part, as
we were all drunker than Shane!!". AH, memories.

Pretty amazing, nineteen years later, all my same group that went to the
Sept 1989 show will be going to the March 2008 Orpheum show :D

Shame, but fair enough. It does really hurt trying to sing that song.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.
