Somebody shouted for Johnny Law and he did it as the encore, which was completely brilliant and needs to get on an album ASAP. Crowd banter was great. I loved his bit about finding the drunken cop passed out in his dressing room, which somehow wound up with "fuck cops" as his conclusion.

Very personable, funny guy and loaded with talent. Anybody who doesn't like him is, oh, what's that word I'm looking for, uh, nuts.*

*That's hyperbole, but just barely.

The point is that as far as support acts go, Whitmore's the best.

I agree about that performance. He's a great showman, and seemed genuinely pleased that the crowd knew some of his songs. I'd love to see him again.

I think 2004's support at Brixton was The Basement.

No, it was Morning runner.

Are you sure about that?

Yes, I'm sure. Always believe what the teacher says! 8)

It may be worth mentioning that photos of several of these acts (since 2005) are available at:

Many years ago I had a New Model Army gig spoilt by the support band, a steaming turd of an outfit called "The Almighty" at a venue that wouldn't let me back in if I went out for beer!
Best supports would be Kate Rusby and the Waifs, both supporting Braggy.

Back on track, in the late 80''s at a gig in Birmingham where the Pogues were joined by the Special Beat, the support band (whose name I forget, something like Fleidh Cowboys?) blew the lid off the NEC during their soundcheck.

I generally favour the 'in the pub' idea these days.
I wish I'd done biology for an urge within me wanted to do it then

Fury In The Slaughterhouse are from my hometown, but I never liked them that much. I´ve never seen them live, but the studio albums were a bit too mainstream (= boring) for me.

Earlier they make good music, but today they were boring. I like to see the Oysterband as support band. They were much more better then the Levellers.

Not sure who opened in Philly 2007, but they were utter shite and literally got booed off the stage IIRC.

2006 NY was some irish rap hybrid.

2004, I saw Shane and the Popes on Pattys at the Shepherds Bush and Family Mahone opened. I think I enjoyed them nearly as much as the Popes... if not more.
