Just joking!
Random killings in Belgium? No, that never happened. It must have been a story made up by the newspapers. Ok, we had these communist terrorists of CCC in the 80s, the gang of Patrick Hamers, the Bende van Nijvel, Marc Dutroux, and 2 weeks ago a young police officer was shot down by gangsters with machine guns, but other than that? No way!

We'll be leaving for Ireland on Friday, otherwise we'll just go to some crappy pub in Temple Bar

I should warn you, however, that Temple Bar is not ideally positioned for the RDS. To go RDS-ward, you need to head up Grafton Street, walk down the Grafton Street side of Stephen's Green (where the Shelbourne is/was), into Baggot Street and walk right up Baggot Street until you are in the Ballsbridge area. You'll know you're there because Dublin suddenly gets all posh. The RDS is in that district. There are a number of pubs in thr area of the RDS, of course, as the RTE crowd are a thirsty bunch and their HQ and Studios are also in the area, but I hesitate to recommend one, as they're all bound to be jammed. If there's a gang of you, you may prefer to meet in one of Baggot Street's many hospitable watering holes, but allow at least 30 minutes to get to the moshpit at the RDS from there.

You can do all this in a taxi from Temple Bar, of course (except the drinking) but it won't be half as much fun and anyway, central Dublin will be even more crowded than Ballsbridge this Sunday.

Most of those pubs are pretty good options. And don't forget, in Merrion Row, a little strip between Stephen's Green and Baggot Street, but basically just part of the route I descibed above, is O'Donoghue's, world famous as the pub The Dubliners formed out of. If you're lucky, there may even be a session going on on Sunday, though don't expect to see any of the Dubs there.

It's only fair to mention that this will be the most crowded pub of all.

Thanks for this suggestion too. That pub was already on our list of places to visit, for exactly the historical reason you mentioned. But I didn't realise it was sort of halfway between city centre and the venue. So don't tell anybody, it's our little secret, right .. :?

Take care, Philip, and of course we are hoping you'll be present to throw in a few riffs. Shall we count your surprise appearance as the second of our little secrets !?!

yours,

Mick and I and two other great lads will be around tomorrow (Friday) already, then head for Belfast (guess what ..), and then be back in Dublin again on Sunday. Me bags are packed, I'm all excited and much looking forward
