Tuesday's show at the Fillmore

Post Fri Oct 26, 2007 5:15 pm

I need to point out that this past Tuesdays show at the Fillmore was probably one of the best shows I've ever been to. The Pogues blew my mind.

Duly noted.

I, too, feel compelled to point out that each time I see The Pogues I am convinced that that show was, in fact, the finest show I have ever been to.

Well ... Except ... I think my most vivid memory of any Pogues show (or any show for that matter) was the first time I saw the Pogues. October of 1991. The Warfield. Shane was just gone, and Joe Strummer was filling in. The band was fantastic, I was twenty, I was there with my bested friend (later to become The Lovely Mrs. DzM), many Clash favorites were performed (including Straight to Hell), etc. It was like getting two dream shows magically mushed into one fantastic show - The Clash + The Pogues. "You got your awesome into our awesome!" "You got YOUR awesome into my awesome!" So ... hmm ... Yeah, it would have been fantastic if the whole band were present, but I'll always smile when I remember that show.

I guess they're ALL the best show I've ever been too. Every one beautiful and unique, a snowflake to be treasured.

Tuesday night was my first Pogues show and it really was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Sounds and images are still vividly racing through my mind. I've always been a loyal fan, but now I'm absolutely devoted. Thanks DzM for your photos - can't wait for your shots from 10/23!

I think I enjoyed the shows last year more, for three reasons:

- First time seeing the Pogues
- Philip was there
- Fairytale of New York.

But of course these ones were great too.

I saw the Sunday evening Pogues concert in SF. I had only heard Pogues music a few times before I went to the concert.

The Sunday night show was quite rowdy, especially right up against the gate. By the end, I got tired and pushed around a little bit. Exactly what I'd expect from a bunch of drunk people enjoying drunk people playing music about drinking. It was amazing!

The musicians were very skilled and energetic, especially considering their age. I love to see older performers who have come close to perfecting their art--especially the ones that artfully balance plastic cups on the backs of their heads.

Despite the fact that I am not a big Pogues fan, I really did enjoy the concert and I hope I get to see them again.

Cant wait for the HoB tonight!! Being quite a bit smaller than the Grove, I suspect there will be a TON of energy tonight.

I think I shall hit one of the Wiltern nights as well.

Halloween Night!

Post Mon Oct 29, 2007 6:18 am

I'm really looking forward to the Halloween show at the Wiltern. I've been a huge fan of the band since the late 80's but have never seen them live. I hope the Wiltern's all decked out for Halloween.

I hadn't seen the Pogues live since Berkeley in '89, with no Shane. The gear was all held up in customs, so they played on rented gear. The accordian showed up during the second or third song, and they had the wrong strap, so a roadie had to attach it with gaffer's tape...and they blew the house down!

i have a recording of that show! you're right, it's pretty damn good stuff. and your description rings a bell, from the comments section of the tracker where i got it, so i suspect you have it too.

The look on Bob Dylan's face was priceless. Not only have these guys left their lead singer behind, now they don't even have any instruments to play! I suppose we were fortunate to be playing to a Dylan-friendly crowd, long since accustomed to expecting the unexpected.

I saw that show. I always referred to it as "Bob Dylan closing for the Pogues." HIS band seemed to be the one that was a shambles that night.

Can anyone tell me what time The Pogues generally take to the stage? Thanks!

But the Fillmore opened the doors at 7:00. The Wiltern is door opening at 8:00, so it seems reasonable to add an hour to the on-stage stage.

William Elliott Whitmore is one of the openers (probably first). You should be there to see him. He's fantastic. You won't regret it.

I think the Wiltern has a curfew of 11 or 11:30 though, so the Pogues probably won't be coming on at 10:30. Last time they played there they came on around 9:30.

I also just looked at my tickets for Oct 31, and they say 8:30pm! That all seems to be rather late, especially with 2 opening acts. Maybe someone on the road can confirm or get more information. I would bet that the first opening act will start pretty promptly at whatever time it says on the ticket. And maybe the curfew is midnight.

Will is dreamy. I'll always be a booster for his shows.

Go see him. Go buy his stuff. Tell him I sent you. Buy him a beer (or a whiskey).
