IRA (?) song Shane Sings before encores

Post Thu Mar 15, 2007 12:29 am

Saw The Pogues in all their glory Saturday night in Boston, was the third time and this time around Shane was the most coherent.
Anyway does anyone know that song that Shane sang/sings before the first encore? He sang it when I saw him the first two times. I believe its about an IRA solider that seeks exile in the USA.
He sang it accapella (or however you spell the word that means "without the band").
If anyone has any idea what it is please hit me back. Thanks

*Republican song

I know he's fond of singing The Boys Of Kilmichael, but I don't think that's what you heard. Can you remember any of the words?

might be "boys of the old brigade"?
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

Thats not true. They have played Boston twice in the last few months. I saw them after Thanksgiving and they played the 10th but I was at the Pogues.

lol sorry but it is true, Gary told me himself.

Gary Og, his band The Exiles and 'The Gary Og Band' are all sometimes incorrectly billed as 'Eire Og' because it's what their best known as.

Could anybody shed some light on why Éire Óg split?
Truth is, we were together for a number of years, we did a hell of a lot of playing during that time. By the end of it all I had simply had enough. I fancied a break for a while so I left the band. There really isn't much to it. All other stories are simply not true, no matter what you might have heard. Anyway, I know some people won't believe me, but there you go.

The Boys Of Kilmichael
(Trad / ad. Patrick Galvin)
Chorus:
Oh forget not the boys of Kilmichael
Those brave boys both gallant and true
They fought with Tom Barry's bold column
And conquered the red, white and blue

Whilst we honour in song and in story
The memory of Pearse and McBride
Whose names are illumined in glory
With martyrs that long since have died
Oh forget not the boys of Kilmichael
Who feared not the ice and the foe
Oh the day that they marched into battle
They laid all the Black and Tans low

On the twenty eighth day of November
The Tans left the town of Macroom
They were seated in Crossley tenders
Which brought them right into their doom
They were on the high road to Kilmichael
And never expecting to stall
'Twas there that the boys of the column
They made a clear sweep of them all

The sun in the west it was sinking
'Twas the eve of a cold winter's day
When the Tans we were eagerly waiting
Sailed into the spot where we lay
And over the hill went the echo
The peal of the rifles and guns
And the smoke from their lorries bore tidings
That the boys of Kilmichael had won

The battle being over at twilight
And there in that glen so obscure
We threw down our rifles and bayonets
And made our way back to Granure
And high over Dunmanway town, my boys
They sang of the brave and the true
Of the men from Tom Barry's bold column
Who conquered the red, white and blue

There are some who will blush at the mention
Of Connolly, Pearse and McBride
And history's new scribes in derision
The pages of valour deny
But sure here's to the boys who cried, Freedom!
When Ireland was nailed to the mast
And they fought with Tom Barry's bold column
To give us our freedom at last

So forget not the boys of Kilmichael
Those brave boys both gallant and true
They fought 'neath the green flag of Erin
And conquered the red, white and blue

Boys of Kilmichael" may have been recorded by Shane MacGowan for the Snake cd as a demo but never released or this may just be a urban myth.

He sang it on Podge & Rodge Show lately , but it was by no means the first time he sang it .

The Ginger Man Celebrates Its Eponym
By GARY SHAPIRO
October 31, 2005
Brooklyn-born author James Patrick Donleavy, who grew up in the Bronx but expatriated to Ireland, returned to Manhattan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his classic novel "The Ginger Man," about an uncompromising hedonist named Sebastian Dangerfield. Over the years, the book has been praised by many - including Dorothy Parker, John Lennon, Kenneth Tynan, and Van Morrison.
The party was held at The Ginger Man, a bar named for the novel and located at 11 E. 36th Street. The bar's owner, Bob Precious; the author's son, Philip Donleavy; and two of the author's friends, Bob Mitchell and Stefano Ferrari, were hosts.
Shane MacGowan sang "The Boys of Kilmichael" and "Peggy Gordon."

The filming next year of Dunleavy's masterpiece The Ginger Man was also discussed. Depp will play the lead while Shane will play Brendan Behan. Shane was asked was Dunleavy writing the script, his response was hilarious. "Of course he's going to write the f***ing script for Christmas! He's hardly going to hand it over to f***ing Tom Stoppard!" he laughed. "Or you! Or me! JP is going to expand the Brendan Behan part."

The myspace site lists a good few up & coming gigs
Gary Og/ Eire Og ?Does seem to be a bit of a unclear situation.

Saw Eire Og many years back in the Brazen Head before a Celtic home game.My brother got talking to Gary for a while that day , seemed like a sound man.I think they played there alot at the time.

Was Gary Og also in a band called "The Exiles " ,are they still going?

Eire Og split up some time ago. The drummer played whistles with Partisan, another band Gary was in for a short while. There are 2 excellent songs by them available for download from http://www.garyog.com/audio/ (The Patriot Game and Diamuid O'Neill - the latter song was written by Gary).

Yep, Gary, Coach Sean and Kevin play in the Brazen Head every Sunday. The upcoming gigs in America (incl Rocky Sullivan's) will pretty much be 'The Exiles', the only difference being that when billed as The Exiles the songs are mainly ballads and folk songs, however when it's "Gary Og" or "The Gary Og Band" you can expect more rebel songs.

The new studio album is a Gary Og solo project, although it will feature other musicians on most tracks.

The shortened version I've heard Shane do goes more like Behan's:

'On the eighteenth day of November
Just outside of the town of Macroom.
The tans in their big Crossley tenders,
They hurtled along to their doom.
But the boys of the column were waiting
With hand grenades primed on the spot,
And the Irish Republican Army
Made shite of the whole fucking lot.'

The 28th
if you dont know the date that turned the "TAN WAR"
Dont sing the song and dishonour the memory of the then 22 year old Tom Barry

And if Shane don't know the date he should shut up !!!

Bas no Bua.

Colonel Buxton Smith sure as fuck didnt forget him
