March 5th Chicago - Medusa meet pre-show?

Post Fri Feb 02, 2007 6:45 pm

Glad to see The Pogues slowly drifting inland and away from the perceived safety of the East and West coasts. After traveling to both Atlantic City and L.A. for shows last year I see a Chicago stop and can't help but hope the band will someday make it to Colorado. But until then, I've got my ticket for the March 5th show and I'll be meeting some very good friends of mine driving in from Ohio. Chicago is one of my favorite US cities and I may try to make the Blackhawks' home game the day before the concert.

My question is for the locals and those of us coming in to town for the show. Anyone up for a pre-show get together? Grab some drinks at a nearby pub before the show?

Hey Orion - I'm coming in for the show on the 5th. I don't know Chicago at all, but name a pub and I'll find it.

This is my first post. I needed to add my suggestion as a native of Chicago and a lover of Irish music, Guinnesss and Whiskey.

Cheif o'neills is a great pub, if you are staying near O'hare airport and taking the CTA blue line. Brennan who owns the place is a grand host. But if you are staying in the downtown area, the best Guinness is poured at Celtic Crossing on Clark and Chicago Ave. It is a walk to the blue line, but the place is worth it. Especially on sunday night, where they usually have seisiun between 4-9 pm. If you like trad. Just my two cents.

Thanks NeedNot...Good to get the local perspective.

Where's the Congress in relation to either of these pubs?

Not sure where I'm staying yet, but I've still got my CTA card from my last Chicago trip and it's got a couple bucks on it. I say keep it near the venue or near the L and I'm down for it.

Cheif O'Neills is the leading contender then? Can you post some info on where this is in relation to the venue and the L?

As much as I love Chicago downtown, I'd rather stick closer to The Congress.

First time in 20 years

I caught the Pogues at a club in Cincinnati in 1987. Now, 20 years later, I find myself living in Chicago and very happy to have a ticket for the first of two shows in March. I caught the Popes in 1995 but it was nothing compared to seeing the Pogues in action. Can't wait!!

Brian - you're in for a treat! The band is in top form these days. The fall U.S. shows were awe-inspiring. These guys are in a league of their own!

Now - to decide on a pre-show pub... Keep those suggestions coming.

Are there any pubs within walking distance of the Congress? It's on N. Milwaukee between Western and N. California on the Blue Line - Logan Square / Bucktown Neighborhoods

here's a location map:

I will probably try to get my group to go to Halligan before the shows – here is a link to their website: http://www.halliganbarchicago.com/ .

If you want a spot by the Congress – consider the The Map Room (http://www.maproom.com/ ).

I agree - Celtic Crossings is a great option also (http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/loca ... 2444.venue )

Looks like it leaves us with 3 choices:

1) Chief O'Neills - a couple miles away, Irish
2) Map Room - 3/4 mile away, but not Irish
3) Hallligan - a couple miles away, Irish, some concertgoers already planning to be there

I'd vote for Halligan's - who's still up for this?

I am for sure and would love to meet some of you - any sort of rollcall possible? Halligan has 1.50 bottles and 3.00 Guinness that night...the jukebox has everything that we would be looking for...cabs are all over the place from there as well...My main concern is what time to leave - perhaps Mr. C would be able to help us out with this question...it is a 5-10 minute cab ride...

OK Halligan sounds good. How 'bout you CdN STeve and Territa? Should we all wear a red carnation in our left ear since it will be far too cold for Medusan Ts?

Alright, then, Halligans it is. Thank you all for making the executive decision. I'll pass it on to my cabmates.

And I'll be wearing one of my Medusa shirts -- I've lost enough weight, I'll layer.
