Complaint about Glasgow gig

Post Fri Dec 22, 2006 6:16 pm

Was at the Glasgow gig last monday, third year in a row. I decided to bring along my digital camera and get some snaps but to my horror every time i went to take a photo i was practically set up on by the neandtheral security guards. I noticed this being done to everyone who went to take a photo or video on their phone. So after the gig i asked to speak to the head of security to see why this was. And he told me apparently it was the BAND who had asked that no photos be allowed. Why is it, that their fans (who pay £26 a ticket, £13/14 an album and more money on other merchandise) are not allowed to take a few pictures for their own personal enjoyment?

I took photos with my phone without complaints but everytime I saw someone using a camera the security pointed them out with a flashlight.
My photos are not so good but I´ll put them up on photobucket soon.

Cheers

I used my camera at Manchester without the flash, but none of them came out too good as my camera was not fast enough without it.

It didn't matter anyway as I got some good photos before and after the gig.

I have seen chuck berry ones at Belgium Rhythm 'n' Blues in Peer. He stopped when someone took a picture and waited leaning against the piano till the guy came giving his film role :D Took about 10 minutes.. There is probably always the problem that people make money off you as performer!? But on the otherside, things must be going bad if you have to worry about that..

While this is a frequent passing of the buck by venues, it is also true that the band, and Shane in particular, intensely dislikes Flash photography while we are working. Even the pro snappers in the pit during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th songs are obliged NOT to use flash. As there is no easy way of policing the "no flash" rule in the audience, all cameras tend to be frowned upon and this is enforced more by some venues than others. I think this may also be why phone-cameras are more tolerated (they tend not to have flashes).

Anyway, I'm sorry, I disagree with the basic argument. You pay £26 or whatever to see The Pogues perform two hours of their best songs, not to provide yourself with a second-rate record of that show. We are not an Ancient Monument. Well, we are actually, but at least The Sphinx et al do not have the song-playing argument to fall back on.

all these complaints ? Just be glad the band are still going- thats my opinion, i'll go anywhere i can to see em and just make the most of the venue, got to admit though as far as venues go Britain is way behind the U S- that Nokia theatre is class

I find it hard to believe that standing next to me in Brixton Acd wasn't your best Pogues experience ever! ;)

Not sure about anyone else.. when I want to see pics of the gigs I normally look at the gallery or I bug MacRua for some direction. I dont see the point in spending '£26' to have your eyes fixed down some lens when The Pogues are playing some fanfuckingtastic tunes! Pictures will always come second best to me.

I agree entirely. I'm a rubbish photographer anyway and having had drink and trying to focus while jumping up and down surrounded by lots of other people doing likewise - no chance.

Is there anyone but me who didn't record fairytale on a mobile this year? I don't know how it must look from the stage but it would kind of detract from the experience for me if every other person in the crowd is waving a phone during a piece of your finest work.......

Actually, the sight of the massed phones is not troubling at all. At worst, it is just a variation on the old cigarette lighters thing.

My defense of Philip on this one is simply that I hate being the victim of flash photography when I'm expecting it, and I can only imagine how much more annoying it would be if I had to be subject to it multiple times while spontaneously trying to put on an undistracted music performance.

That said, I understand why people take photos. I like visual reminders of gigs so I can recall the experience more viscerally - the pictures my friend got of the Halloween gig where everybody had mariachi outfits still bring a smile to my face.
