Plans for 2007

Birmingham Gig in 'The Barn' they call the NIA

As a lifetime fan of the Pogues I can't wait till December comes round each year to catch them live BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you revert to playing the gig at The Academy in Birmingham rather than the barn that is the NIA.

It's such a crap place for sound and it doesn't do this fantastic band the justice that they deserve. I understand that it holds much more people than the academy but the atmosphere just isn't the same but more importantly it's just a wall of sound bouncing around the 'barn'.

Great set though and I'm already looking forward to next year (fingers crossed). :)

This might be a good moment to revise the impression that The Pogues do a UK Christmas Tour every year. We did one in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006, but we did not do one in 2002 and I'm not sure we did one in 2003 either. In any event, we already know we are unlikely to do one in 2007. Basically, we tend to agree with those people who think it's a bit sad to see this become just another showbiz tradition. That's not a reason for NOT doing a Christmas tour, but I think it's fair to say we don't want to feel tied to this annual jaunt. Moreover, as 2007 is the 25th Anniversary of The Pogues, we are hoping to do some things celebrating the fact that we're still here to tell the tale 25 years on, including, we hope, some special London shows in October. We are also likely to be in New York, Boston and Chicago during March and are investigating some European dates as well, though none of this is as yet set in stone.

I met Mr Warners (or Mr Rhino, as he is now apparently called) backstage at Brixton the other day and he is keen to discuss the rarities box set afresh, so there may be some movement on that too in this Anniversary Year.

Meanwhile, thanks for all your support and affection in 2006 and may you have as peaceful and happy a Christmas and New Year as current world events allow.

Love

Ow please! I've already started a little campaign on a Dutch site to get you to Europe's oldest festival Pinkpop down here in the Netherlands. You played here in '88 already and the 'boss' of the festival is a fan as well :D

Sounds interesting, it's early days yet though, wait until nearer the time and see what comes up.

I completely agree with Mr Chevron. Having first saw and even met The Pogues in 1984 aged 18 and then many times subsequently, I can say the first time I saw the return of The Pogues in 2001 was incredibly emotional. When I walked out of Birmingham Academy that night I thought it would be the last time I would ever see them. I never expected a permanent reunion. Now I have seen The Pogues in subsequent years and having gone to two concerts this Christmas I have begun to think you can get too much of a good thing. I hope the band remain active as a unit, but don't fall into the trap of becoming an annual pantomime - no offence intended to anyone. In the absence of new material I think it is good that The Pogues are exploring other ways of expressing the magic of this legendary band.
Mr C - is there any prospect of a really high quality documentary film covering 25 years of The Pogues? That would be awesome. Would there be enough live footage to make it work? I am sure RTE would be interested in a project like that.
Thank you and the rest of the band for all the pleasure you gave to so many people as we come to the end of 2006.
Happy Christmas and good wishes for 2007.

In fairness, "No Christmas tour in 2007" is not quite the same thing as "no more xmas gigs".

The world is cruel.

At this moment it's my understanding that I'll be in London for a week in March, and then from there will be going to Bangalore for a week. That means the odds are against my being able to stalk ... err ... see you guys on these hypothetical dates.

Thanks for all that Philip. Looks like I'll be making the trek to NY in March if that's as close to D.C. as you're coming. I've learned my lesson. Drop everything as soon as an announcement is made, TELL my wife that I AM going, and then buy the ticket and INFORM work well in advance that I cannot be "on call" during a Pogues tour.
Hell, might as well go to Boston, too. 8)

And since you have started passing out the holiday blessings, .... I love you too, dude! :D Have a peaceful, if not restful, Christmas.

p.s. -- That boxed set would be rounded out nicely with a dvd.

This all sounds very promising, Mr. C ( especially the investigation of European Dates  ).

Twentyfive years, wow.

When I was sitting in the MEN-Arena packed with 16,000 people I was very impressed: A band that has not published a new record in 10 years attracting so many thousands of people of all ages - that's amazing.

This does sound very promising :D

I know one thing for sure. I'm definitely going to take some time off and do some traveling for some gigs next year ;) Mainly because I only made it to the Anaheim gig this year and I really wanted to go to the LA ones too, but my schedule didn't allow it unfortunately.

And congratulations to Philip and the rest of the band for making it through yet another successful year of touring :)
