I'm pretty sure that means leather pants, a silk shirt unbuttoned to your navel, and gold chains & medallions.

Has anyone found any good deals at hotels on the Strip? I have yet to find any good deals for under $200 a night. :(

I can only recommend that you shop around. I thought that Las Vegas was a relatively cheap vacation. Guess again.
Don't rely on travel websites, (Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotels.com,..etc.) They are a good starting point for preferences, but not necessarily the cheapest.
Hotel availability dates are not always accurate either. Go to the site of the hotel that you may be interested in and you might get better rates, as we did.
Again, shop around.

Vegas Room Deals-Excalibur

Just got an email from Excalibur (the King Arthur-esque) hotel, close
to Mandalay Bay. Oct. 12 $59 Oct 13-14 $139 and Sunday Oct 15 $89.
Deal comes with $20 Dinner Credit and $20 Match Play.

I have never stayed there, but I would consider this a mid-level Strip hotel
now one of the oldest. But, you can definitely stumble out of the show,
and walk to your room (or take the monorail).

late update on hotel room

Post Sat Sep 16, 2006 4:36 pm

well lads, as expected the cost of room is way up at this late date. expect to pay around $200 for a decent room. $100 for a cheap one but remember Vegas is abig city with alot of crime so if you take up at Slim's Motel expect to get stabbed in the face several times on the way to ice machine.

I'll be there for the Sat show and would love to drink a pint or four with others. Let me know!

by the way, if you heard that the Sat show was sold out, thats shit. My friend got 2 good tickets last night (sept 15, 2006) from the ticket master web site. Oh, whats to convenient about their $9 convenience fee?

Las Vegas Hotels

Post Mon Sep 18, 2006 8:36 am

The rates are crazy for the show weekend, our usual backup dump - Stratosphere is sold out. I've stayed @ Mandaly Bay for $99.00 & consider anything over $200 retarded! Just visited Vegas to see David Spade @ Mirage, and went to Downtown Vegas for the first time, loved it & tried to book old school Fitzgeralds, which was sold out.
Anyways, The Embassy Suites Hotel Convention Center still had rooms yesterday. For $189.00 u get a 2 room suite, 2 tvs, micro, fridge & free breakfast buffet . While the location is not good, Left of the Hilton, Waaay behind the Wynn. It is next to the monorail, which is pricey @ $15.00 a day or something.
The cool thing about this hotel is that they don't charge a deposit @ time of reservation. While I would prefer to be @ Mandalay Bay or The Hotel for the show, who's gonna go apeshite & pay $450.00 plus? It doesn't help that Mandalay Bay contains it's own convention center. After the Sat show, we have to make the airport by 6:30 A.M. Sun. anyways - insane!
Stay Classy.

Circus Circus

Post Mon Sep 18, 2006 4:28 pm

Circus Circus seems to have availability during from Oct. 12-19.
$62 Thurs, Sun-Thurs and $125 Fri/Sat.

This is at the northern part of the Strip (only the Strat and Fremont St aka
downtown) would be further away.

Personally, I don't care for the place, but it's cheap considering all the conventions. The Steakhouse is supposed to be wonderful.

I can also recommend the Golden Steer which is around the corner.

Hotel advice

Post Mon Sep 18, 2006 11:01 pm

Greetings,

If anyone is still looking for a hotel room for the weekend, here's a few ideas:

El Cortez- $140 a night (Fri/Sat). We're staying there (although we booked a cheaper rate). It's downtown but on the corner of Las Vegas blvd. Bus would work just fine from there. It's the oldest standing hotel in the city. Classic Vegas feel. Nice rooms.

Las Vegas Club- $114 (Fri/Sat) a night. It's also downtown. Not bad but decent. Has a sports theme.

Four Queens- $159 (Fri/Sat), also downtown

Plaza Hotel- Also downtown- $99 a night (Fri/Sat). A bit lower class.

Gold Coast- 130/140 (Fri/Sat). Near the Rio and across from the Palms. I've stayed there for the Rockabilly convention. It's not bad.

LAST RESORT- The Gold Spike- Don't stay here unless you have no other choice. It's the BOTTOM of the barrel. But I mention it only because some Pogues fans may be on an EXTREMELY TIGHT BUDGET. It's $44.99 a night for Fri and Sat. It's downtown and I understand the rooms are sorta clean and you're pretty safe once inside your room. I've had friends that have stayed there seeking some kind of adventure and they all survived without injury, but had plenty of stories of strange goings on.

This seems to be one of the most expensive times I've ever seen for Vegas. I've been dozens of times and never seen it like this (I must miss the conventions when I go usually).

If there's any Pogues fans staying downtown, we'll have to get together for a drink before. Or maybe after the shows, hit the Horseshoe cafe for a late night $3.99 steak dinner (It's actually very good!)

Cheers.

Vegas Downtown

Post Tue Sep 19, 2006 3:39 pm

Just to follow up on BBO informative post. Fremont St itself is pretty safe,
but once you move a block away you really see the underbelly of Vegas.
Gold Spike, Lady Luck, El Cortez are all off the beaten path. I had a comped meal at the El Cortez once, it was actually pretty good. The scene
in the Chevy Chase movie Vegas Vacation where he was playing "Guess a Number" etc. was supposed to be filmed at the EC, but they wouldn't allow it.

The Orleans is decent. Its $120 weekends, $60 a night. Closer and nicer than most places downtown. Its a a bit off strip. But, its a quick cab ride/drive to the strip.

Its where I'm staying this trip.

The Orleans room rate has dropped to $97 for Friday and Saturday and $47 weeknights that weekend. If you call them direct tell them you saw it on Orbitz and they will match it.

In General its always better to shop sites like Orbitz and Travelocity for price and then book direct. The Hotels will charge you one night in advance. But, refund with 48 notice. They also don't charge if you leave early. If you book it through a travel site your charged all upfront and you may not be able to get a refund,

Dang! - just booked at Orleans last night. I'll give them a call and see if I can wrangle a lower rate. More funds for gambling and Guinness!

update: rebooked 3 nights - $78.75 per night - I owe mrpurple a cold pint!!
