RE: Thousands Are Sailing

Post Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:56 am

let me preface this by saying, i saw the Pogues in Boston on the 15th and then hopped a bus and caught the 16-18th in New York. I had the time of my life and couldn't come up with all the right words to explain it. All of you who went to any of the shows know what i mean.

Anyway. I hadn't been to New York since i was around 10 years old. But Thursday night before the show i walked down Broadway and everything fell into place. I finally knew exactly Mr. Chevron was talking about in Thousands are Sailing. That song never seemed as vivid as it did during my stay in New York. And of course I made sure i held my buddy's hand as we walked down Broadway on the 17th.

and i do remember hearing some bootleg of Mr. Chevron singing Thousands are Sailing and at the time i thought it wasn't all that great. But hearing him sing it each of the 4 nights was truly amazing. I think he does an even better job than Shane did on the album.

that's all my rambling. Thank you New York and thank you Pogues!

Beautifully put, McSweeny. Philip's rendition never fails to bring tears to my eyes, and hearing him sing it these last few nights right in Times Square, in the heart of Broadway - well, for some pleasures in life, there are no words. :)

Mr. Chevron,
I was at the NY shows on the 16th and 17th and although all of you did brilliant job, i must say i was very moved by your performance on Thousands Are Sailing. It was passionate and heartfelt and you truly owned that song! Fantastic job!!!

Thank you for expressing that so perfectly. I had a very similar experience: I was walking in Times Square the day of the show with my headphones on, listening to my "If I Should Fall From Grace" CD, and when Thousands Are Sailing came on it just leapt out at me-- it truly seemed so vivid. I feel like I've never understood it better. In the middle of Times Square it gave me chills!

Seeing them do it that same night was surreal (in a good way), especially since I'd never heard Philip sing it before.

It was appropriate Philip do Thousands... no one could have done it better or with more heart and passion.

Come on, who didn't pass Cohan's statue in Times Square that night and think about dancing down the street?

What, was I the only one who tipped my hat to the statue of Cohan on the way to the show?

Well, I saw the Pogues in Atlantic City on March 11, and I thought Thousands Are Sailing was one of the highlights of the show. Mr. Chevron, you did such a magnificant job performing the song. Applause all around

Not the only one! Although my friend Terry and I did it afterward, screaming the song and drawing nasty looks from all the tourists.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but why does Philip sing the song now rather than Shane? I think both versions are great by the way.

Once Mr.Chevron answered this (or very similar) question.
Try to read this. Is your curiosity satisfied?
