i went to the show last night and had the greatest time. It was my first oppurtunity to see them after all these years and well worth the wait. The setlist was almost identical to the 3/9 DC show. The Borgata venue itself wasnt too great but it was a good crowd. Didnt get too rowdy until late in the show, which was good for my tiny girlfriend. Bottom line, Shane is exactly what I hoped for live. One of the greatest nights ever.

How was the audience? How were the Saw Doctors? What time did the Pogues go onstage? Also, is anyone familair with the band opening next Saturday at the Nokia?

Saw Doctors were great, they added a few lines and the chorus from Springsteen's Atlantic City into their set.

Off stage by 8:25, Pogues on stage by 9:05ish.

Shane was the last one on the stage and late. The band actually started Streams and then had to stop due to Shane's delay.

Funniest line of the night, "How did you all get in Shane's room?" Apparently, Shane's suite was huge and he was hearing about it from the band.

The venue: eh, its a casino, very strange to have carpet on the GA floor. Sound was suspect, it took the sound guys a few songs to get everything close to right. The Pogues first appearance in AC and they were trying to get a feel for the place. The Borgata is a beautiful casiono, but probably not the best music venue, too sterile, give me the 930 club any day.

Crowd: energetic, mixed. Much more into the show by the second half.

The Pogues: Brilliant, very tight, pretty much the same set list as DC. No hat for Shane, he was engaged most of the night.

Highlights: Broad Majestic, Rainy Night, Sunny, Sally, shit, pretty much everything.

Overall: I have seen Shane before, but this was the real deal. The band is in good form and the NYC shows should be legendary.

the setlist has been the same each night so far, but it's a great set so no worries.

I was at 9:30 club too and while I don't like the casinos, I think the overall site lines in the room are far greater at the event center at Borgata than at 9:30. Plus the bigger stage did indeed make for a lot of room for a playful band.

It was also nice to have room to move and dance and not be bumping into one another, although I know some prefer the mosh pit atmosphere, I'm too fuckin' old for that crap anymore.

both shows I went to were phenomenal, but since I'm short, the Borgata show worked better for me since I always had site of the stage and all band members no matter where I stood!!!

I thought the crowd was a bit more unified in the sing song of the singalongs in AC than the one night in DC I saw the show. Having everyone on one level (sort of) helped I guess. I dunno.

doesn't matter, it's great no matter where or when you see 'em. :P
without music, I'd be dead.

Where are the drunken reviewers with their gambling? THAT's what the Casino moan-agement are wondering. Or something.

WE"VE BEEN LICKING OUR WOUNDS!!!!!!!

Lost big early so the preshow party consisted of a 12 pack, bottle of Boones and a small bottle of Bacardi. The show was very good. Shane was probably the most sober as I have ever saw him or I was very drunk. Okay, I was very drunk, but I don't recall Shane messing up any songs too badly. Compared to the crowds at Brixton, the crowd at AC was awesome and it was the first time I could watch the Pogues without being constantly squeezed into a railing. I guess I did get pretty drunk as I remember constantly shouting for the Boys of Kilmichael. Actually won a good chunk of my money back at the casino after and ended up partying on the Jitney with a driver from Canada.

I guess something was kind of missing being out of the UK or Ireland and it was also weird for me since it was the first time I have intereacted with so many Americans in 14 months. But overall, I thought Shane was in top form and the band was awesome. I brought my buddy from Texas as it was his first show and he was absolutely floored.

Such is a review!

Post Mon Mar 13, 2006 10:22 pm

OK... I was actually pissed to not get tickets to the 9:30. I was on the phone when they sold out and really pissed!

A few weeks later a friend asked if I would be interested in seeing them in AC. Hell yeah!

My thoughts: The new 9:30. Yeah, it is a nice club. a good place to see a band, but it is not was it was, nor will it ever carry the history it had on F street it lacks that intimacy. Just my opinion.

The borgata (or however you spell that mess) was a great place to enjoy a show. You could simply move out of the way of poor drunk Richard.

So a commentary on the weekend:
Arrival friday, first pints with the boys, then off to locate a TV to watch the IRE rugby match in the AM. On the way there, Somewhere in the Tropicana I mananged to find a pub that had BEAMISH on tap. Danger Beamish is really good. OK... Ill take two in less than 15 minutes. So from there we meet with the mates who are already singing songs in the Ri Ra irish bar in the Tropicana. Yes, several pints in we were asked to leave because our ruckus was disturbing folks that were eating. Yes, this was setting a tone for the weekend. No such luck on the rugby. We could not believe that. To wash our sorrows we played a bit at the Tropicana, enjoyed the free drinks as fast as the waitstaff could satisfy. Lost a bit there, and wandered out. We drank pints Irish Pub until about 4 AM... then decided it was time to go look for something to do. CRAPS!!! Yeah... that is the ticket. After a few more free 4 am drinks and a visit back to the Irish Pub a good stagger we all manage home.

The morning brought a saavy light and an early start for the Parade. Two pint sized white russians later (courtesy of the Chelsea Pub), I was content and well armed to deal with the masses. Tons of things green on the Boardwalk. Hokie, but what can you do. We ended up Mackies across the street from the irish pub. Good celebration they had going. In the typical fashion the boys decide to start buying rounds. This rounds thing is a very interesting story, because no one really cares to communicate who is getting the next one. Many times in the heat of the moment several rounds arrive at once. Yes, life is grand. Life is ever better when the hooters girls (now off and out raising hell) are bringing your beers for you. By about 5 we decide it is time to get something to eat, and get to the borgada.

Its late and I have a date... (to be continued!)

Agreed. At the 930 F Street location, in the Atlantic Building, it was a small place, with a lotta poor sightlines (big column smack-dab in front o' the stage and that kind o' thing). But the place had something intangible -- "spirit" or something. The staff seemed to genuinely enjoy the music and be a part of the club's atmosphere.

I'm a shortish woman and I'm all in favor of ousting people who are picking fights, but I've seen some situations where it seemed to me that the security people were overly eager to drag somebody outta the club, rough 'im up, shout in his face, whatever. I realize that their jobs can be stressful, but there are times when this kind of thing has distracted from my appreciation for what's going on onstage.

Fortunately, I didn't observe any ridiculously overzealous actions from the security staff while the Pogues were onstage.

Carol, you probably missed it, but someone nearly got thrown out of the 10/3 show about three people down from us on the left. I'd say he had it comin', but I'm old and cranky!

9:30 has great security. If you're acting like an idiot they generally throw you in the middle of whatever pit there is. That usually takes care of things.
I like this bad set and I like getting drunk at luncheon.

Large sweaty guy who seemed to have barreled through several people to get to the front? I felt the pushing (which I think was felt more strongly by the people to the left,) and I noted that people behind him were indicating to the security guy who was causing the problems. I wouldn't've had a problem with that guy being ousted. I saw the security guy staring him down, and I guess he fell into line. I didn't see exactly what went on, but if this guy, in fact, barreled through several people, I'd've been fine with his being dragged out.

I've seen instances, though, of what I thought was excessive force on the part of 9:30 security. There have been occasions when I'd've been fine with somebody being hauled out, but it seemed unnecessary to have yelled in his face, etc. Just grab the idiots and throw 'em out. No need to stage a showdown.

9:30 past and present???

Post Tue Mar 14, 2006 3:56 pm

Actually the old 9:30 had security not that they did anything. I got thrown out once. It was the Dead Milkmen and Mojo Nixon! I sort of like the old way of self regulating bars.

If you were an asshole the staff would politely explain that you would need to leave, else they would have to fill out a report for what happened to you. Frankly, that report would waste valuable time that they could be doing other things, AND they would have to clean up the mess that was made when you got the snot kicked out of you. No one wants that, not you, not the guy you were bothering, not the band, so just don't do it.

I was really unimpressed the last time I was atthe new place, because people were basically cattled out into the street when the show was over. It was over early too. I would have hung out, drank some more overpriced import beers and made a night of it. Who knows... I guess that is just not my idea of a club. That kind of makes it a concert hall.
