My conversation with Shane, after D.C. show on 03/10

Post Sat Mar 11, 2006 6:33 pm

Happens that Shane was staying at the same hotel me and my friends Darren, Dan, and Dan's girlfriend Elizabeth were staying at (I won't name it here out of respect for the band's privacy). Anyway, we get back from the show at the 9:30 club and the three of them hang out for a few drinks in the hotel bar. I go upstairs to the room to pass out, as I had been up since 6:00 a.m. Friday morning.

After an hour or so, the come back up to the room (12:30 ish?) and wake me up to tell me that Shane is downstairs in the lobby hanging out. I get my senses about me and get dressed and head downstairs to see for myself. Sure enough, there is Shane with his purple tophat on, with a gin or vodka tonic in the lobby. Amazing to realize that we're in the same hotel Shane is!!! (Thanks to the other posters who listed hotel suggestions on the board, as we used it to book our room).

Shane is talking to a couple friends/acquaintances, and I certainly don't want to be "that guy" who goes up all gushing over Shane. So I just play it cool and observe for a while, just to get a feel for the situation. After hearing from Elizabeth that Shane's friends want their privacy, I figure I might as well head back to the room and not appear like a stalker. So we all go back upstairs.

After a half hour or so, I decide to go back down to check the scene out. Shane is ALL ALONE. By this time, it is about 3:00 a.m. Elizabeth comes with me, and we decide to offer Shane a smoke. He doesn't want to go outside, so we ask the hotel clerk if we can go in the "now closed down" bar since they have ashtrays. After a little persuasion, he agrees to let us in, as long as we don't make a mess. Liz quickly cleans up the gin and tonic that Shane had just spilled as a good-will gesture, and we go into the bar.

To make a long story short, 3 hours later we get asked to leave the bar area as the morning staff has arrived to set up breakfast. What a great 3 hours of talking with Shane, about topics like men on the moon, property rights, beer purity laws, and John F. Kennedy. We walked Shane up to hi room on the 5th Floor and wished him a good night. Boy, was it ever!

(Philip, if you see this, please give our best to Shane and thanks for the great show. And by the way, Darren and Dan were so pissed that they missed this great experience. Sorry guys, we tried to wake you, but you're getting old. What can I say? From a true Pogues Fan.)

I have a splitting headache right now and hearing about other people having these great experiences is making it a little better. But running into Shane MacGoway and having a three hour discussion with him, and doing so without apparently making a fool of oneself, well that is brilliant. No, Heather.... I don't hate Mike. I envy him so much that it borderlines on hate. Its a joke. Anyway, I'd love to hear more about it. :)

Eric, Here's some more info from the talk with Shane. Glad you appreciate the experience I had;I really couldn't have written a better script if I had planned it our for months. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime occurance.

For people who have never had the privilege of personally meeting Shane, there are probably some pretty common misconceptions about him (We've all seen him in the "Fall from Grace" documentary, or heard stories). But let me state that Shane is extremely personable, very bright and quick witted, and highly educated and knowledgeable. That being said, there were a few times I had to ask him to repeat something because I could not decipher it the first time.

here are some of the topics we discussed. And again, this is merely informational for those interested, it is not meant to be biopic or all-encompassing. But 3 hours is a long time...

1) Men on the moon. I think Elizabeth brought this up, I believe while talking about water vapor being dtected on Jupiter or Saturn or something (check out CNN.com to clarify). Shane said that while he believes the moon landing in '69 (?) was legit, he said there's no way to prove it, such as why the US flag is blowing when there's no wind. Liz started babbling about the lack of gravity causing the flag to "float" and give the illusion of blowing in the wind. Shane and I disagreed.

2) Shane believes no one really "owns" property, that it belongs to everyone, to the entire Earth, etc. Also, that ownership really only means someone has title to land, but that we really work for the land/earth. That ownership is only a slip of paper (i.e. a deed), not something tangible. I thought that was an interesting perspective. He also talked about how suburbs are not the same as the main city, that a city is the center of society.

3) On coming to the U.S.: Shane said he likes the East Coast a lot more than the rest of the U.S. (Sorry to the West Coast fans!). He likes D.C., but said he would not want to live here on a permanent basis. Shane certainly has strong opinions, but like most Europeans I speak with, he always had good basis and foundations to his arguments.

Whew. Sorry if this is boring people, but it's good to get it down while it's still fresh in my mind. More to come, if people are interested. Just let me know. Thanks!

Wow! That is a great experience, thanks for sharing it with us! Every one of us would love just a few minutes with Shane (and the rest of the band for that matter). Gave me chills reading it...

Thanks for all the great replies, I'm glad you guys enjoy the recap from last night.

One of the funnier conversations with Shane was about alcohol (imagine that). We were talking about drinks (like I mentioned before, Shane was drinking a gin/vodka tonic), and Liz went up to the room and got a couple of bottles of Guiness (I know, silly American's drinking bottled Guiness). Well, we offered Shane a bottle, but he said he dislikes beer. He said he prefers drinks with liquor or wine, basically because it works faster than beer. I agreed, saying that when I drink, it usually wasn't just to have a sip, it was to get a buzz going. That was kind of cool, talking to Shane about that subject, because he had a really "matter-of-fact" opinion on drinking. He even said something to the effect of "most people drink based on what their goal is, i.e. if it's to get drunk, they drink harder stuff, etc.

I brought up German beer purity laws, and he cracked up laughing, saying in the old days in Ireland and U.K., beer brewers would get killed if they didn't brew their beer strong enough. We got a laugh out of that one...Shane certainly has a great sense of humor. Once again, I still can't completely believe I spent 3 hours with him!

was just thinking if neil armstrong had lifted the flag up so it wasnt sagging down by the pole it would have stayed there because there is no gravity.
