Injured at a Pogues Gig?

Post Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:50 pm

Having read a post in the "back in the day" thread I was wondering if there were any accounts/reports of people be seriously injured at any Pogues' gigs?

seem to remember this was @ Brixton last Xmas.
Apparently back in the 'good old days' football matches were so over-subsrcibed that it was commonplace for gentlemen to relieve themselves against or in the pocket of the unfortunate in front of them! Halycion days,eh?

I've been to numerous Pogues gigs over the years (about 20 in total), but I've only been to one where there was a serious safety propblem. I saw The Pogues at Wembley Arena in 1988 (approx). Although I wasn't injured personally, quite a few people were. Wembley insisted on keeping a seating area at the front. The fans wanted to dance (obviously), resulting in a huge number of people cramming in to a small space. The crush was huge and a lot of people were injured. The band had to go off stage for 20 or 30 minutes whilst order was restored. People were getting carried out on stretchers and various band members took it in turns to come on stage and plead with the audience to move back. I remember Spider got quite annoyed because the audience weren't doing enough to move back and shouted out something like "for f*ck sake, people are getting carried out on stretchers, have a bit of f*cking humanity and move back". Shane was his usual calm self, casually saying, "All the people at the front are gonna die, unless you move back", which resulted in a huge cheer! I think some people in the audience failed to see the gravity of the situation and there could easily have been fatalities. To calm things down The Pogues re-arranged the set list when they came back- starting with The Band Played Waltzing Matilda and Brown Eyes, I think.

It still rankles after all these years - it was the first and only time the security conditions of our contract were ignored. The Wembley people took the view that "we've had them all here.....Osmonds, Beatles, Stones, Bowie....why do this lot have special safety requirements that weren't good enough for Rod Stewart?" We told them the barriers were inadequate and they just ignored us. What really made us angry was that the Wembley "safety officers" had spent half the afternoon setting fire to our stage set to satisfy themselves that it was fireproof (it was). These guys sure knew how to prioritise the safety conditions. It was not a mistake they repeated.

I have broken two feet at gigs. Not Pogues gigs though. And not both at the same time. And both my feet, not someone elses. The first time I didn't really feel it until I started walking home. The second time I knew straight away and had to take my boot off, which I then could not get back on. What's wrong with my feet? They must be weak or something..

I remember that in December 1990 in Essen the Band did not come onstage for some time because there was some problem with the barriers.

First I was pretty worried that they would not perform at all. But later I thought that it was extremely cool that the band seemed to care about their audience's security.
