Old Tour Shirts

Post Wed Feb 01, 2006 6:45 pm

Some memories of Manchester 05 are still seeping back into the grey matter but one observation that I can clearly remember is that I was amazed by the number of old tour shirts I could see. I think a geezer in a Peace and Love World tour shirt was pogue-oing in front of me at one time. That was 17 years ago or more!

My shirts of the time now fall into 3 categories i) Stretched to buggery through over wear ii) Been defiled through either misuse by spouse or transfer being ironed over by some eejit or iii) rendered unusable due to an increased waistline so I have chucked them.

How do people keep their shirts so pristine? Even my 04 top is showing signs of wear - almost to the point where I am afraid to put my County Hell shirt on through fear of desicration.

In addiiton to being meticulous over their washing habits, anyone who owns an old shirt must also be on some kind of super diet to still fit into them.

I have one of these, but I'm not sure if it's legit or a bootleg - bought it at the NYC show at the Beacon Theater in '89, but I can't remember who I bought it from or where. It has 11 fingered boxer on front, flanked by 8 band headshots from "P&L" jacket and "1989 Tour" on front, and "Pogue Mahone" in huge red letters on the back. White. Anyone know?

In any event, I had to retire it (put it in my parents' attic with all the other stuff I couldn't bear to throw away) about 10 years ago due to general graying and pit stains. Perhaps I will bring the old girl out of retirement this March.

in Glasgow this last December, before the show the 13th, we were having a few at the Brazen Head. I was approached by a girl who had been with a group at the table to the side. After finding out I was a fan and a collector, she told me she had a shirt Shane had given her 20 years or so ago, and wanted me to have it if I promised not to sell it. She sent it to me! It is in absolutely gorgeous condition. It's an old RSL shirt, dark navy, with the best detail I've ever seen. I will take a picture soon and submit it .

I think it's safe to say that the only way to take good care of these things is to not wear them.

Angela, thanks again.
