First time to NYC

Post Thu Jan 19, 2006 2:13 pm

Hey everyone! I am SO excited to go to this show. Just have a few questions that I hope people can help me with. First of all, I am driving down from New Brunswick, in Canada and I am wondering if I should park outside the city and ride or try driving downtown.

Also I am wondering about the general admission tag. Does that mean it is first come first seated, or that it is a standing room show?

I sure hope that this show doesn't get screwed up somehow. This will be the culmination of a dream.

I am not from NYC, but having been many times, I can say that Times Square is a tricky place for parking. I have this following link that lists the 10 closest garages to the Nokia . Good Luck!

sometimes it's just easier parking at port authority and walking.

Not sure I would suggest driving all the way into the city, unless your hotel is guaranteeing you parking. On a regular weekend, the cost might be prohibitive, and on St. Patrick's Day weekend, it will be a madhouse. You'll run the risk of ruining your time, just to keep your car close by.

So here's what I would suggest. Park at one of the Metro-North railroad stations, which is free over the weekend, Fri-Sun. I assume you'll be driving down the Thruway (I-87), so there are many options, including Beacon, Peekskill, Tarrytown, and even Yonkers. From Beacon, the train ride into the city costs about $22 round trip and will drop you at Grand Central Station. From there its a short subway ride to Times Square.

Those coming from the west might consider the Metro-North West of Hudson line, or even the PATH train from Hoboken.

In any case, the Best of Luck, and hope to meet you there.

We go to NYC a few times a year and drive to New Brunswick, park in the municipal lot (free on weekends) across from the station then take the train to the city. I can't remember how much it is, something like $15 round trip. Driving is really a PIA and parking is worse, it will be worse that weekend.

30-06 gives GREAT advice for Metro North park & ride. But if you're coming down I-87 from the Great White North,it doesn't come close to those stations. If you're coming down I-87 & want to drop the car, you'll need the Port Jervis Line. And the problem with that is that it is on the wrong side of the river. You'll need all sorts of transfers & what nots.....so,let's do this,we'll combine the excellent advice of 30-06 & the MTA website for help.I'll click the link & hopefully it will read the way it is supposed to.Looking at their directions, they are perfect, except for one thing.....the first line!!!!!They take you from 84.Don't quote me on it,but to get to 84 from the Thruway,I think it is Exit 17.I could be wrong on the exit #,so just make sure that you look for I-84 East. You want the Newburgh Beacon bridge. That will bring you to the "southbound" directions that they have posted.OK,I'm going to try & copy & paste the link now.... http://as0.mta.info/mnr/stations/statio ... cfm?key=56

Bigmaciraq,

I grew in New Brunswick and have visited New York a few times. I ussually fly but have also driven. Parking is always a concern for me bur a friend has recently suggested that if I drive down to park at the "lomg-term" parking at Newark airport in New Jersey and shuttle over to Manhattan. As a visitor you won't want/need a car in Manhattan, walking and subway are the best means of transportation.

Depending on what street you are on, it feels like a wind tunnel sometimes. Some old folks love it!! The pubs are quite warm and inviting.

If you're going to drive all the way into the city, the Port Authority parking lot is the way to go. The price is about as cheap as you're going to find in the city - about $20-$22 for up to 12 hours, more for up to 24 hours - and it's a short walk to the Nokia. One caveat - the lot closes at 1:00 am, which should allow for some post-show hanging about.

Anyone else staying at the Milford Plaza in Times Square? I have tickets to the Sat. and Sun. shows. Sounds like we're taking the place over...I hope they don't board up the pubs and shop fronts!
