"Throughout the year, the Victoria Clipper and Kenmore Air ferry thousands of people to and from Seattle and Victoria, B.C., often on last-minute jaunts.
But the companies and others in the state fear that border crossings will plummet and business will drop in the near future.
Their concern: A federal law designed to improve homeland security will require anyone -- including a U.S. citizen -- who enters the country from Canada to carry a passport.
What is raising specific alarm bells now, especially among tourism-related companies, is that sea and air travelers from Canada must hold passports beginning Dec. 31."
