Next Years Supportact

Post Wed Dec 28, 2005 9:20 am

What band would we love to have as a supportact for the Pogues in next years reunion tour?
I would love to have a more Folkier band.
I loved DKM as a supportact they were fantastic
BUT it would be nice to have a band like Levellers or Oysterband to support the Pogues.
Why not Christy Moore, Fairport Convention or Richard Thompson.
Diehard fans of Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson usually don't like the Pogues because the Pogues don't play Folkmusic the way it should be played
So then we force them to be at a concert with the Pogues and maybe they will see that the Pogues are the real deal when we talk about Folkmusic
Christy Moore would also be very nice, maybe Christy and Shane could do something together at the concerts.
They did a lovely Spancil Hill together a couple of years ago in a TV-show

What supportact would you like to see next year?
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior and shove you in the ground. But you'll stick your head back out and shout "We'll have another round"

Ah yes, that particular battle was joined early in 1985 at the Dominion Theatre in London, where The Pogues supported Mr Thompson. The gig was notable for Pogues fans - even then, a lusty-sounding bunch - serenading the star with a few choruses of "Who the fuck is Richard Thompson?" My guess is RT would rather not repeat the experience.

Hi mr Chevron
Nice one Pogues supporting mr Thompson, sometimes you wish you had a "Timemachine" would have been fantastic to see that show.
I really like Richard Thompson he is a fantastic guitarist and a lovely songwriter but the fans......
Once Richard said about his fans
"They're worse than real critics. They are amateur critics."
Happy New Year to you and the Pogues
P.S. If I win on a lottery and want the Pogues to come and play in Sweden next year who should I talk to.
The Pogues have always been very popular in Sweden 8)

Yes indeed. This despite the fact that Sweden is the only country in the world to have seen The Pogues with Elvis Costello as lead singer. 8)

Who remembers which gigs Elvis played drums? Were they in Germany?

I think Costello did that in Malmoe

Remember one concert in Stockholm (Johanneshov) Pogues had just released the Hell's Ditch album. Nearly 5.000 people were there.
Shane sang 3 songs with the band and then went in to the dressing room and fell asleep
Same evening in Gothenburgh Sinéad O'Connor only had 2.500 people at her show in Scandinavium. She had just released a Prince-cover and that song was on the radio all the time :)

That evening I visited Johanneshov and Spider did a fantastic job as the lead singer after Shane has left the stage 8)

First time I did see the Pogues must have been on the Peace & Love tour, also in Stockholm (Solnahallen), the place was packed with fans and they did a fantastic show. Remember they played Greenland Whale Fisheries and a Velvet Underground cover.
Fantastic concert :D

Mr C, I remember this one for the wrong reason. A few of us went upto London to try and get tickets. Went to the Dominion box office and was told it was a GLC promoted gig and sent to County Hall. Wandered around County Hall for ages trying to find someone to speak to and eventually informed it was sold out.

I do recall the Richard Thompson incident though. I'm sure the Daily Mirror carried some story about Pogues fans rioting and fans invading the stage.

But why would we want to play with any of those people? They are not what the Pogues are about at all. This is something that drives me nuts, people lumping us in with all sorts. I really wish they wouldn't. Forget Donleavy and Boyer in the Pogues dressing room, there was a moment of real magic down the corridor when Ronnie Drew walked into the Dropkick Murphys dressing room to congratulate them on their version of The Fields of Athenry and then spent an hour talking music. This is a man who from the word go has understood exactly what we are. As, infact, do the Dropkicks.

Lets not have a heated debate about this because i am right.

I was not a fan of the Dropkick Murphys before the shows, but after seeing them, I must say that of all the opening acts, I thought that they came the best to capturing the spirit of the Pogues (possible exception to the Saw Doctors).

As it has been well documented in both the history of music and the Pogues, traditionalists have mostly been resistant to any changes in thier music. SO why should the Pogues try to change this?

Spider, and Philip -- have you heard Hank Williams III and the Damn Band live recently? the first half of Hank III's live act, the one with the Dobro, stand-up base, and fiddle. I think Pogues fans would enjoy their twists on traditional country music.

Really liked DKM I also have some records with the band.
But I would love to see a more Folkier band as an open act and the band must have the right attitude to their music

I think Saw Doctors is to much of a Popband
Levellers and Oysterband would be perfekct as an opening act for the Pogues. You have songwriters like Billy Bragg or Christy Moore they would also be perfect as an opening act.

Pogues whistle player are always right
BUT in this case I would welcome a more Folkier supportact and that's my opinion 8)

Next Years Support

Spiders right! Dropkick Murphys were a great choice for support. Lets see more exciting rock 'n' roll bands next year. We don't need folky purists.

Even at the risk of sounding like a complete wanker, I must say that Dropkick Murphy´s and The Dubliners are the only bands that popped into my mind when I read the topic of this discussion. Dublin gig must have been the ultimate Pogues experience of this time.

Well, celticjunk, you are entitled to your opinion but I think you fundamentally misunderstand the nature of the band. The pogues are not a folk group and Billy Bragg has far more important things to do than support the likes of us. The Levellers are shite and Christy Moore? That would be like Don McLean opening for Motorhead. As for the Sawdoctors, I would never chose to play with them but twice now they have been dumped in our laps by clueless promoters.Looks like it's happing again in Atlantic City but I assure you this will be the last time. Thank fuck and Holy Mother Russia for Gogol Bordello.

Oh shit, now I'm getting into arguements with people who may only possess electronic identities.

By the way, if anyone is intrested, I know Mickie Stabbs. He's Welsh and fronts an absolutely brilliant punk band called Strawberry Blondes.
