Hey speaking of walking, anyone have an impression of the St. Paddy's day parade they would like to share? Waste of time, or worth the spectacle?
You guys going to be on a float this year, Phillip? Imagine that, a Pogues float... I'm thinking you could use the theme of the raft on the cover of R,S&the L....with music blaring from the thing... and escorted by a bunch of Brendan Behan-looking people walking along side.... or maybe something as subtle as a long green Cadilac Eldorado convertable.

If you have never been to the parade you have to go. It's the oldest parade every - this is the 245th annual. Just be there for the beginning. The Fighting 69th "Irish Briagade" always starts the parade, and it's fun to watch some of the pipe bands. I am always amused at the police band; they are playing the pipes, wearing the kilts and their guns. By the way I think the parade starts at 11:00. About an hour or two is more than enough. Then the bars start looking very good!

Well now I'll have to rethink it and give it a few hours. I love the pipe bands, and it might take a few hours to really sink in... and what are a few hours in the context of thing? :D

Thats the truth, what are a few hours. It will be a fine start to a fantastic day! I was very moved in 2002, the parade stopped and turned around towards the WTC for a few moments at the time the first plane hit on 9/11. Where we were stood there as a police group with flags for each of their fallen sons. Either direction we looked all you saw was a sea of flags. It's a good parade, even if it has no floats. You are right about the pipes, they go right to your soul!

Will a Pogues guitarist marching with New York Irish Gays on St Paddy's Day do instead?

Quite. :D Be it with my wife and kid or by myself (still not sure of teh billing), I would gladly turn out to cheer you all on, dude. Just let me know what section of the parade it will be in. 8)

And by the way, since you brought it up.... Shane says in his book with Victoria that you were the first punk in Dublin... that true?!

The first punk in Dublin in moden times was Jimmy Joyce.

But I was the first to make a speedy, snotty 45 that lasted less than 2 minutes, yes. For that matter, Television Screen , which reached #17 in Ireland in 1977, was the first Top 20 punk single anywhere in the world.

i saw the 2002 parade - very emotional when everybody turned south to the wtc site. hearing the pipes reverberate around the skscrapers is amazing.

i stayed at the park south hotel on 28th st, very good, central to everything, close to the subway and a couple of blocks from the empire state... surrounded by lots of resturants aswell.

top NY bar - the holiday cocktail lounge near st marks. very cheap for manhattan.

I stayed at the Time Hotel on west 49th street (and Broadway) last year, not a bad place, conveniently located for Times Square also only about twenty yards from the Brill Building.

For those wanting a bit of luxury the Michelangelo is also close to the venue & I am lead to believe is one of the best in its price range (NB I have never stayed there, this is jist what i have been told).

My wife & I are coming over from London & have got tickets for the Sunday night show. We will be staying in Tribeca this time so it will be a cab back from the Nokia Theatre.

Has anyone got any idea what time the show is likely to start/finish? The London shows tend to have the Pogues taking the stage just after nine & finishing around eleven.
I ain't doin' no deal with the devil until he starts a loyalty card scheme.

Well, the shows are listed as starting at 8, not sure if there is an opener. If there isn't, it's likely the show will start pretty close to that time.

Nice that you're staying in TriBeCa, that's a great area.
I'd be nothing without baseball.

most times i prefer to walk places than to get cabs--so what im needing to know is how long are these streets? say im on 47th and i need to walk over to 22nd--will that take me long? i can manage to walk 5-7 miles no problem so i was wondering the distance. i prefer not to take cabs cuz i rather use the money on really good food--and i mean really good food and thats not where i want to cut corners...

Each north to south grid is roughly 1/10th of a mile. You can really make tracks. You can do 20 blocks in less than 20 minutes, without an extra breath.East-West is another story. The blocks go on forever!!!!As for Times Square, don't walk through it,walk around it.You'll be there for the show & be able to see it & enjoy it then.As for walking, you can't move!!!

Well, I'm late to this board and thread so excuse this tardy reply.

Transportation to NYC is easiest from Newark (airport code is EWR). There is a monorail that links the 3 terminals and goes directly to the train station. Purchase tickets at the kiosk before getting on (either $9 or $11 round trip, I don't remember) for NJ Transit. Amtrak also goes there but is much more expensive for the same service. The train will take you directly to NY Penn Station. From there it is a short walk from the NJ Transit part of the terminal to the subway part and take the #9 subway downtown just a couple of stops. The subway is, I think, $2.00.

My 70 year old father was able to do this a few months ago. It's really easy.
