I hope I remember this thread come December - I plan to celebrate my 21st in NYC.

I'd like to stay within a half mile of Times Square so I can walk (or dance, or whatever strikes me at the time).

... in for a pound! :D

For walkers - and who isn't in New York? - stay no further south than 32nd Street and no further north than Central Park.

Thanks. Thats what I was thinking based on my map analysis. Bought a guide book this weekend.

Hey speaking of walking, anyone have an impression of the St. Paddy's day parade they would like to share? Waste of time, or worth the spectacle?
You guys going to be on a float this year, Phillip? Imagine that, a Pogues float... I'm thinking you could use the theme of the raft on the cover of R,S&the L....with music blaring from the thing... and escorted by a bunch of Brendan Behan-looking people walking along side.... or maybe something as subtle as a long green Cadilac Eldorado convertable.

Hotel Suggestions

Post Tue Jan 10, 2006 3:09 pm

Mr. Joyce wrote:Also try the Washington & Jefferson on 51st Street and 8th Ave - it is very reasonable for New York (or so I have been told), and there is a nice pub within 20 paces of the entrance.

The Belvedere on 48th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue may also be worth a look.

https://www.hotelbelvederenewyork.com/? ... GgodCiw5DQ

Both are within a 10 minute walk of the Nokia. I live here in Hell's Kitchen and there are scores of other places as well.

http://www.hostels.com/en/us.ny.ny.html

I don't know anything about any of the places listed here. The Times Square Hostel and Chelsea Star are the only two that are close to the Nokia, however.

You might also try the Skyline Hotel

725 10th Ave
Manhattan, NY 10019
(212) 586-3400

This is on 10th Avenue, and is bit further off the beaten tourist path, so the rates may be a little lower here. I've never been inside, but it looks OK from the outside.

Also, try the Travel Inn Manhattan, 515 West 42nd Street, (212) 695-7171. It's not much to look at, though.

More hotels, from an earlier post - the only ones I really know anything about are the Belvedere and the Washington & Jefferson - I think the W&J is more reasonable pricewise - it is very popular with Euorpean travelers visiting NY.

If I remember correctly, it is the oldest parade in the US and may be the largest. Interesting to stop by for a bit just for the volume of people. Mostly what you will see is bands and marchers representing every County/Order/Club Irish related. It is nothing like the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade or the Rose Parade, no floats or very few. Used to be more fun many years ago when there was less of a crackdown on drinking.

Thanks! :) I just read about it on the official site. No floats or cars -- only walking/marching. I think I'll do like you said and just soak it in for an hour and move on. Got to look for a good pub!

Will a Pogues guitarist marching with New York Irish Gays on St Paddy's Day do instead?

That is very funny! I guess the church across from St. Patricks will be your meeting spot. That is where I usually see the gay protesters that are not allowed to march in the parade.

If you have never been to the parade you have to go. It's the oldest parade every - this is the 245th annual. Just be there for the beginning. The Fighting 69th "Irish Briagade" always starts the parade, and it's fun to watch some of the pipe bands. I am always amused at the police band; they are playing the pipes, wearing the kilts and their guns. By the way I think the parade starts at 11:00. About an hour or two is more than enough. Then the bars start looking very good!

Quite. :D Be it with my wife and kid or by myself (still not sure of teh billing), I would gladly turn out to cheer you all on, dude. Just let me know what section of the parade it will be in. 8)

And by the way, since you brought it up.... Shane says in his book with Victoria that you were the first punk in Dublin... that true?!

Well now I'll have to rethink it and give it a few hours. I love the pipe bands, and it might take a few hours to really sink in... and what are a few hours in the context of thing? :D

Here's another lodging link.

I just happened to stop by this YMCA yesterday (it's near my office) and I noticed that they have guest rooms. What's extra cool about these places is I'm pretty sure you get use of the facilities while you're there. The YMCA's here are well kept and the rates seem to be under $100. Even if there are only rooms available for one or two of the nights you're here, it will save you some dough.

The Vanderbilt YMCA is right near Grand Central, very central to everything.

Check it out.
