When I visited NYC I had the opportunity to use both Newark and JFK. On both occasions we used a direct shuttle bus to (and later from) the Porth Authority Bus Terminal which is close to Times Square. Worked very well, I don't remember the exact cost but it was cheap compared with the taxis and you didn't have to go through the hassle of subway riding with plenty of luggage. Will probably be my preferred choice if I ever get to go back.

Well we walked, I believe the hotel was on 47th Street so it was close to the Port Authority. Taxi is probably best if you stay further away.

If in doubt, NEVER rely on a New York cabbie to know your destination, it can only end in tears.

Here is the correct way to address a New York cabbie.

"Empire State Building please. That's a very tall building on 34th STREET. Remember the movie King Kong?"

The man speaks the truth.

Always, always know the cross street of your destination, i.e., if your staying at 234 West 47th St, you need to know that it's between 7th and 8th Avenues and that is what you tell the cabbie.

Act like you know where you're going if you do not. This will hopefully deter the driver from taking you out of your way. It's easy to spot a tourist, and a tourist often means they have no clue where they're going.

So do yourself a favor and look up the addresses of your destination on Yahoo or Google maps. I'd also suggest buying a good street map before getting here so you have a chance to get a sense of where things are. You'll likely find you can walk to most destinations once you are in Manhattan.
I'd be nothing without baseball.

by Super-Shuttle
from JFK Airport $17.00
from LaGuardia Airport $15.00
from Newark Airport $ 17.00
Just claim your luggage upon arrival. Then proceed to the Ground Transportation Desk and ask for the Super Shuttle. They will arrange SuperShuttle transportation directly to the hostel.

I lost track of the thread on where to stay in NY. Can someone either point me there or maybe its worth reviving the conversation. I'm now planning to come to NYC (have not locked in on a ticket but have a couple of good leads). 8)
I'd like to stay within a half mile of Times Square so I can walk (or dance, or whatever strikes me at the time).

... in for a pound! :D
