The glaswegian is one of the few rangers pubs around that area and will not be very pogues friendly.

If you don'y fancy the Brazenhead because it is too Celtic orientated then I would recommend Mchuills on the High street. It still is a Celtic Pub , most Pogues friendly pubs are, but it is a bit more discreet about it. I believe the owner is related to Spider but I am not sure if that is an urban myth or not.

It plays superb music all the time and is regularly frequented by all your student types. It is definitely the most trendy Irish / Celtic / Pogues bar you will probably find in glasgow. Is about a 10 - 15 minute walk from the Carling. It is a 1 minute walk from the big clock on the high street.

What? Really?

[etc etc]

Edit: Comments removed since this pub/club rivalry seems to have something to do with a political fight I want no part of.

DzM, we kid you not.

I've had to look for a different coat to take this year because the nice, lightweight one I bought for the trip last year is a dark, burnt red color with black. I was getting some looks in Dublin, but it wasn't until I saw the Rangers merchandise in the store at the Glasgow airport that I figured it out -- Rangers colors are the dark red (from my coat) with navy blue. Thank God I didn't take the coat to the show!

The last post I made was not intended to make comment on any "Pub / Club rivalry" but as advice to people visiting Glasgow who are not familiar with the lay of the land.

If someone wearing a Pogues T-shirt walked into the Glaswegian or any other pub frequented by mostly rangers fans they would probably not be made welcome, no matter whether they were from Glasgow or LA. As I said just a bit of advice, nothing else.

and good advice it was----last year Pogues fans were warned on the shane forum to stay clear of certain areas that are known to be bad areas to walk around wearing pogues shirts. i wouldnt want to get beat up and im sure others would not want to either..

THIS IS A TRAVEL ADVISORY for the unsuspecting tourist.

No, it's nice and neutral, very unassuming. :D

Glasgow is a wonderful place to see The Pogues. Most everyone out last year near the venue was there for the show, and the mood was electric. It's really a lot of fun.

The only other cultural caveat I would mention for first-timers is this: everybody in Glasgow smokes everywhere , inside as well as outside. So, don't wear anything you wouldn't want to just burn after the show.

I am a protestant ,a Rangers supporter and have been a huge fan of the Pogues since they were formed.Ive seen them at the Queen Margaret Union at the Barrowland umpteen times in Glasgow and at Murrayfield in Edinburgh when they blew U2 off the stage. In all that time i have never seen anything other than good humoured banter between Rangers and Pogues fans.
I will be at the Glasgow Academy on the 12th unworried if i am the only protestant in the building that night (which im sure i will not be).
I would urge anybody coming to Glasgow not to be put off or worried by the religious crap that blights my country.Glasgow is a vibrant diverse city with many attributes and i hope everybody will enjoy their visit.
P.S. I hope despite being a Rangers fan and a protestant people on this site will not hold it against me.I have enough of that sectarian shite in my life already.

Rangers supporters have always been welcome at Pogues shows by both the band and most of our fans. The sectarian divide has no place in the world in 2005. There are enough crazed Protestants, Catholics, Muslims etc (just to begin a long list) out there trying to mess with our minds without the rest of us offering them any encouragement.

Amen to that!

So -- we hope to meet all of you at the Brazenhead and the Scotia! :)

I went to Glasgow for the first time this May to see Shane - the show cancelled 2 days before we were due to go but decided to go anyway as we'd bought plane tickets etc.

We then discovered it was Cup Final weekend there and were so worried about possible violence that we thought we'd just stay in the hotel bar . We mentioned this to the hotel receptionist and a few other locals and they assured us we'd be perfectly safe to venture out!

We went to several very crowded pubs and I have never met such polite, helpful ,fun-loving , friendly people - without exception! Even despite the fact that most people had been drinking all day and night!

I live in a place that visitors say is about 20 years behind the times but even here groups of teenagers intimidate people in the high street and are often violent and prone to vandalism.

Glasgow restored our faith in human nature and even though it's the furthest and dearest trip to see the band I purposely chose it because of the great friendly atmosphere there!

Strangers to the city will not be disappointed!
