Mojo Nixon, Violent Femmes and Pogues

I remember that show! It was billed (on at least one flyer) as "The Unslaughtered Lambs of the New Wave." Gordon Gano was sick and played while sitting down, I seem to recall.

I thought the AC show was good, too, and agree with your comments-- the lead vocals are lovely to hear, but that is one amazing band! Everything is so brilliant sounding and the only people in the joint having more fun than the Pogues are their fans. Or maybe that is the other way 'round...

I felt AC had a reverent feeling to it. At least where we stood, there were lots of people singing along and waving and swaying but no real mayhem because people didn't want to miss anything, not a note or a gesture or anything.

NYC (maybe because it was 4 dates) had more abandon to it, more slamming around and jumping up and down. Smaller club, clearly demarcated pit, different logistics.

All were everything I (and the folks I went with) could have hoped. Only regret is we are missing tonight...

Just thought I'd pause and thank the band once again for doing this tour. Performances aside (and I'll come back to that), the entire experience was far bigger than I could have imagined. I got all caught up in this web forum thingy, and really learned a lot. I made some friends. I had an education on tickets and venue capacity. I learned to appreciate music even more than I already had. And in the process I rediscovered the socialist deep down inside me.... but don't tell anyone.

The performances were spectacular. I feel like for the past two weeks this was one of the best kept secrets in America, in some ways, as I saw very little promotion. Then again, after announcing the shows tickets sold out immediately, so why bother promoting them?! I knew the band would be phenomenal instrumentally. As Shane stood up there belting out each song, I felt like here is a man who has put himself through hell, and he is triumphantly, and confidently, taking a piss on everyone who doubted him, all the while playing a living caricature of himself for the rest of us.

I hope we were good hosts, and that the Pogues' time with us was fun. I hope we all get to do it again.
:D

That. Was simply the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Worth the wait since high school. What a great crowd, what a great set, what a great fucking performance. I've seen more shows than I can count in my 30+ years, but that, my friends, was the one. I can die happy now.
I found that I can both sing at the top of my voice and cry quite hard during "Thousands are Sailing".
Beautiful. Thank you. If the boys come back in another 17 years, I'll be back again.

the show at the reebok riverstage was a classic...i often wondered why it was the femmes who headlined when it was the pogues that blew the crowd away...
in any event, the cobwebs from friday night have just about lifted. i still don't have my voice back completely. i can't help but be selfish and hope the band makes another swing through these parts before it is all said and done. an annual winter event would be nice. st. pat's was great. i just wish i could remember more of the show than i currently do. (not the first time i have been afflicted by this after a pogues show...i pray not the last) i just remember the band sounded great and the crowd was beautiful. based on the balls of lint that fell out of my pocket saturday morning, there's a good chance we shared a pint or two at connolly's before the show. it was a kinda nostalgic feeling waking up broke and reeking of stale beer.........thank you pogues, thank you fellow travelers

I think you must have your shows confused. The date of the triple bill was summer 1989 and Mr. Chevron was on tour, not Joe Strummer-the classic lineup. In late 1987 Joe Strummer filled in for Mr. Chevron during the American tour.
Debbie Gibson wasn't on the 1989 triple bill, but Mojo did sing "Debbie
Gibson is Pregnant with my Two Headed Love Child" :D

Sunday night's show exceeded all expectations, and I was REALLY afraid I'd over-psyched myself by immersing myself in the Pogues for weeks before the show. My sweetheart, my mates and I hung in our hotel drinking carbombs, went to O'Lunney's for bangers & mash, then went to the show - we were 6 people back from the stage, about the center. Caught the end of Seanchai, dug with pipes in the Sly song. HATED Towers of London - when they started pissing and moaning about people throwing stuff I yelled "You're opening for the POGUES - what do you expect?" They should've played first, or not at all.
I thought it was very cool that so much of the audience sang all of "Straight To Hell".
Once the Pogues started it was as I expected - the place EXPLODED. My girl was getting groped from all angles so after 2 songs we went back a bit to calmer waters.
I won't go into too many details - it was all so fantastic, and paced so well - with so many other wonderful vocalists and a kick-arse instrumental to break things up. All of the non-Shane songs were seriously great - "Young Ned" was breathtaking, I've always had a weak spot for "Tuesday Morning" whether I should or not, The Clobberer did a great job on "Star" and hearing "Thousands Are Sailing" IN Times Square - well, it just seemed like a dream. Philip, that was world-class.
But I can't find words to describe how much Shane's performance meant to ALL of us "American c*nts", as he called us - it was magic, WAY beyond mere "entertainment", although it WAS entertaining as hell. I will NEVER forget that show. I pray for more, but whatever happens, I know I will arrive in heaven a half an hour before the devil knows I'm dead, because I have seen the Pogues.
Thank you for making so many dreams come true during your brief visit. I hope you all went home knowing that America - the coolest part of it, anyway - loves you.

Thanks for a great St. Patty's Day. I am still in awe. The entire weekend was great! Could not have asked for better, well perhaps a little warmer for the parade. Thanks again Pogues!

DVD

Post Wed Mar 22, 2006 5:05 pm

I noticed all the disclaimers about the 17th show being filmed. (which was amazing by the way, best show i've been to since strummer at st. anne's without a question) And I also read in the paper about a live CD and DVD release...anyone have any info on this?

but anyway, seriously great show! the energy of the band and the crowd was amazing, and made for my best st. pat's on record. shane and the popes in London coming in a close second. i had really thought that'd be the closest I'd ever get to seeing the pogues, only being in london for 4 months, but Im so thankful to the band for making it to NYC and giving me a chance to finally see them. Thanks for a great night!

From Philip:

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

Some of you who attended the Nokia on the 17th or 18th may have been aware of multiple film cameras shooting the shows. We hope to use this footage, perhaps in conjunction with the film we made of Manchester MEN 2004, for a live DVD souvenir later in the year.

In addition, Nora Meyers is still making her, if you will, Poguementary, and has been present all through the UK/Ireland tour 2005 and this US East Coast tour as well as the Meteor Awards and other events. She and her producer Danielle Von Zerneck have accumulated miles of footage and will be using it in conjunction with some archive material for a projected cinema film which would also, in due course, be a DVD.

There have been several questions on this topic and this is the most complete answer I can give at present. No release dates or even projected release dates yet. Soon come, as they say in Cahirciveen. Cool

They were filming March 19 as well, but not a huge camera presence.

yeah, i think they were pretty much filming the band and not the audience on the 19th. shame, i would've liked to look for myself on dvd, though i probably would have looked like a fool :P
