Question about Brixton Show - 20 Dec

Post Fri Nov 04, 2005 12:02 am

Rather quick question - I know how it is here in the states, but can I bring a camera to the show or is that not allowed?

Thanks in advance!

I would bet money that cameras and other recording devices are prohibited.

they do search you on your way in at Brixton Academy but reckon you could take a small (unprofessional) camera in if yr discrete . These days it's camera-phones aloft at most gigs and security are too busy sorting out crowd-surfers to turf you out.

I asked the security guys last year and they said a normal 35mm camera was ok as long as you didn't yse a flash. Professional cameras are not OK.

That makes absolutely no sense at all. 35mm is the diagonal measurement of a frame of film and has nothing to do with the capabilities of a camera. It particularly has no meaning whatsover when the conversation shifts to digital cameras.

How do they determine that a camera is "professional"? Interchangable lens system? What about those mid-rancge digital cameras that have a fixed attachment lens?

Bah. Stupid policy.

Anyway - this seems to imply that this promoter (assuming it's the same promoter as last year) has a flexible policy on cameras. Your best bet, then, would be to call the venue ahead of time and ask.

Camera phones are so commonplace in the UK now that the bouncers seem to have given up the fight unless you're being really obvious. I went to see Al Green recently in Manchester and virtually everyone was snapping away with their irritating ringtone machines.

Same story on this side of the atlantic at most shows, even when those with "real" cameras are stopped. I suspect the thinking behind this is that (a) they don't want to start confiscating people's phones (as opposed to just taking your film, which I've seen done), and (b) the picture quality on most phones is so poor there's little chance of the pics landing in the press.

Couple of questions regarding Brixton

Post Wed Nov 16, 2005 12:17 am

First off, I can't wait for this - I'll be at the 20-Dec show. I am flying in from Chicago on Sunday the 18th - I'll be arriving in the morning. I am planning on flying home on Wednesday morning.

That being said, I've booked my room at the Regent - Piccadilly Circus. How far away from Brixton is this hotel? Do cabs run at all hours?

What is there to do/see around this area? Is there anybody else coming in to London for the show?

How should I get to the hotel from London Heathrow?

And finally, what's the weather like around that time?

Thanks in advance!

Take the Piccadilly Line underground direct from Heathrow to Piccadilly Circus - it takes about an hour and costs around £5, but it's quicker than a taxi which would cost you about £50 anyway. Leave the station by the Regent Street/East Side - Exit and there's the hotel right in front of you.

Brixton Station is a few stops south of Piccadilly Circus on the Victoria Line (change at Green Park) and is very close to the venue - just follow the happy folks, you'll know a Pogues fan when you see him/her. Our show finishes around 11, trains run for another hour or so.

I bet other bands don't provide this personal service.

Nobody with any sense predicts the weather in London, but expect low temperatures.

Would you also provide a babysitter and pick me up from home before the shows? If you don't mind? Please?

You are indeed a full service band, sir, and we who are about to fly across the atlantic thank and salute you.

So, let's see - that's two of us so far at the Regent, any more?

Christine, as far as I know all the Pogues are already babysitting after the show. Only Shane is still available, if that's the kind of babysitter you want.
