Thanks Rover, and to soulfinger as well for your thoughtful and well-composed responses.

It seems that a car rental may be in order then, as that would free me from relying on public transit and give me the freedom to at the very least take in the scenery.

I would assume the hotel bar would be serving both days, so I think the drinking bit should play out well at the minimum.

KEEP THE SUGGESTIONS COMING, PLEASE. Thanks in advance.

Be sure to rent a car before you arrive. It's a lot more expensive, double and triple, if you rent it when you get there.

yes---reserve and pay for your car in the states--HERTZ--and you will save a bundle on car rental fees. but with so much available transportation in dublin and surrounding counties, you really do not need to rent a car. believe me--ive been there 7 times now and have practically seen every square inch of it. a car is great for going to the countryside but not for dublin--thats for sure. i wasnt a good city driver at all. make sure you visit the cemeterys---GLASNEVIN in Dublin is nice.

An excellent idea about renting here! Thank you.

I also rarely hire a car in cities as well, but considering the timing, it seems a good plan.

Considering that I will be in Dublin on Christmas Day and St. Stephen's Day, I am guessing that there will be little if any public transportation available and that a trip outside of Dublin is likely to be the only available activity those days as I expect all businesses (including touristy sites) to be shuttered. As a frequent visitor, Carmen, let me know if that assumption is mistaken.

Irishman, please (and don't take this the wrong way) post on topic or not at all. Thank you.

Six weeks to go ! Woo-Hoo!

The Medusa forum software was upgraded earlier today. This particular upgrade replaces the session tracking system, so effectively this means all users have to log back in the next time they visit. Sorry about that. Autologin should work for you after your first login this evening.

The Irish Rail is not running on December 25 and 26. The bus tours that go outside of the city are not running on the 25th. Wicklow Mts tour is running but Newgrange is not. Most tourist sights in the smaller towns are closed in December or only open certain days of the week so check before you plan on anything.

See you at the show.

well Sundays in Dublin have always been the quietest, so i have always found myself walking all over town.since Christmas is on a Sunday--i guess there really would not be much to do. I have always payed a visit to the Carmelite church in Dublin. The church houses the Black Madonna and also bone relics of St.Valentine. but i imagine that the cemetery will be open and if you like Irish history ,thenyou can visit the resting place of Michael Collins and Daniel O'Connell there at Glasnevin.BRENDAN BEHAN is also there as well .i really like Irish cemeterys and have stopped at just about eveyone i have seen.Glasnenin does tours there but i strolled around on my own. they also provided me with a map .and you can easily kill about 3 hrs. there. the place is like a museum. visit the website for more info

Alternatively, you could go to the pantomime at the Gaiety Theatre or "Bugsy Malone" at the Olympia, if dying art forms appeal to you more than dead authors, saints and patriots.

The Olympia and Gaiety reopen Dec 26, as does the Gate Theatre (a very worthy "A Christmas Carol"). The Abbey reopens December 28 with a good-looking "Drama At Inish" (a classic Abbey comedy by Lennox Robinson) starring Tony Award winner Anna Manahan.

December 26 at the Helix has an interesting one-off dance/concert called "Do You Come Here Often? Ireland's Showbands" which looks like fun. It stars Brendan Bowyer, Philomena Begley and Ray Lynam {"Ray and Philomena sang of my Elusive Dreams"}, Sandy Kelly, Larry Cunningham and many more legends from the days of the Irish dancehalls.

My feeling is all of these events will be heavily pre-booked so don't leave it to chance if you want to see any of them. I'd offer to take you to the Dance meself but I'll be on a New York-bound Aer Lingus jet that day.

And by the way, if you DO go to Glasnevin and a Dub tells you it's the "dead centre of Dublin", try to look amused, you'll make his day.

I am blown away by the great suggestions and the assistance! Can there be anything more surreal then Mr. Chevron researching live events on behalf of a total stranger?

To all, you have my deep gratitude.

Please keep the idea flow going!

Thanks DzM for keeping my posts in order as well.
