Sweet Memories
I was just remembering my Patrick's night excursion to Brixton 15 odd years ago. Myself and a friend , Dave, slipped out of school in Birmingham at lunchtime and got the train at New Street to London. We were 15 and Brixton seemed really full on. We got to the Academy at about six so we could be first in line . We had bottles of wine others started showing up with booze and whistles, Dave went to Mcdonalds (Hey we were young!)for supplies and was refused entry because he was wearing a pogues T Shirt.I'm offered £200 for my ticket.
So we are first in and down the front settled in for a long wait. Support bands play (Sons Of The Desert I think) the room fills to bursting and the drunken anticipation is thrilling , both friendly and scary. Finally The Pogues come on WOW! They are marching slowly from the back of the stage playing Mathilda with green orange and white lights swirling . Shane has grown a shaggy beard , all hell breaks loose. Towards the end I've been shunted to the side and as Fairytale plays the couple next to me have a quicky against the wall. Honestly. The show over we file out leaving several people passed out in the foyer. The whole crowd descends on tube, 5 to a step on the escalator all singing The Wild Rover banging fists on the side panels in time.
On to Euston station we've missed the train. The first one goes at 4AM so we settle down with a couple of elderly homeless guys who are arguing abot abortion. Later the Railway guard keeps waking them up and they have to claim they are waiting to meet relatives from a morning train. Heartbreaking. Finally got home at 10 the next morning and slept all day.
Meeting back at school Dave and I didn't tell our mates much about it all. Don't think they'd have understood. I guess you guys will.
Cheers.
