No strangely, it's to do with the high clay content. The water in the canals and mineshafts hereabouts have always been a kind of rusty orange.

The local council applied to the muppets in Brussels for a shedload of cash to set up a scheme to remove the colour through some big filtration plant thingy and sadly, unlike most European schemes it seems to be working.

Just curious, as where I'm originally from in upstate New York, The Black River was basically a "dead" river when I lived there, due to runoff from paper mills. 25 years later, and an aggresive NY Conservation initiative, there are now Atlantic Salmon running up the river annually

I haven't been to Worsley since the canal colour changed - and I wonder why. (I don't mean why I haven't been back there, but why they bothered to change the colour of the water). My suspicion is that it's something to do with the racecourse they're going to build there. And then my thoughts turn to the Muscovy ducks that used to shit all over the grass and pathway at the bottom of the steps coming down from Worsley Road (you know the bottom of the Brow, I think it is, to the bridge toward the Packet House). Or do they still shit there?

Thanks for the read. I like your style very much, and its interesting to get your perspective. Sounds like after years of touring you have all found a way to balance the logistical nightmare and list/organization/schedule thingy, with personal space.

Took me a while to get what you meant, warmly, leastways, exasperatedly, possibly, affectionate, I hope so. That's pretty much it, in a nutshell. After twenty something years, one's affection is like to get exasperated. And I mean that, warmly.

There was a sunken barge in the Delph (Delft - no that's Dutch pottery). Is it still there? Actually, there were two. One on the south side of Worsley Road. The other on the north, and both coated with curds of iron oxide.

And the racecourse? Is that still going ahead?

It's not quite orange free yet but it's starting to fade. Yeah, the racecourse is just what we need. It seems very on and off but money talks loud and they'll get what they want in the end. The delph is still a bit grotty to be honest but in September we saw three herons down there all at once which was impressive (but not to my aussie relative who was with me - he said "we shoot stuff like that at home!")

As for duck shit near the Alphabet Bridge - we still got plenty!
