You can justify either option - there's a wide variety of places in DC and B'more to stay - the commuter rail (MARC) between the two is easy and not too expensive. I used to live in DC and now am a NJ resident, but work requires me to go to the DC office 2x per month, so I stay downtown often (in fact, I'm in the DC office as I'm writing this). Usually I stay at the Comfort Inn - Convention Center http://tinyurl.com/62sf8t8 which isn't too fancy, but isn't bad either - it's a converted apartment building. I get a discount booking through our corporate travel, but a quick peek for that weekend in March says the lowest rate is $153. Last night I stayed in the oldest hotel in downtown DC, the Harrington http://hotel-harrington.com/. As one would imagine, it's a funky old place comparable to hotels in Europe (odd layouts, etc.) and a little shabby on the edges, but it's clean and fantastically located for touring DC - a block from the Metro Center subway, walking distance from the Smithsonian Museums/Mall area, etc. Their regular room rates are $125 for a small double (take the word small seriously) and $145 for a small queen (which I stayed in and was quite comfortable).

Can't comment on accomodations in Charm City - I never stayed in a hotel there, just up and back from DC.

I decided to stay in baltimore and transit back and forth. Got a ticket for the baltimore symphony orchestra's celtic performance on Sunday the 13th. Not too sure about showing up drunk to THAT show though...

We flew into Newark last time and will do this time too, IIRC we enter Manhatten through a tunnel at the venue's end of town. We'll have been in NY several days before and after the gig this time though.

We get a return flight from the UK, shuttle cab to the hotel and back, and 8 nights for just over £700 each ($1120).

Thats why we come. On a per night basis even with flights thats well less than £100 a night, we pay more than that just for a room when we stay in london, in an adequate hotel. it's a no brainer.

AND your bar staff are nicer.

Laguardia may be the closest in actual distance but arriving at the wrong time of day ( rush hour, construction projects, etc) could have you sitting in traffic you can't imagine for quite a long time. Newark is very simple in to NYC and if your hotel offers a shuttle all the easier trip into lower or midtown via the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel.
Not to mention 9 times out of 10 the airfare to Newark is cheaper then NYC though international could be different.

Ahh yes Clarkycat, St Paddy's in NYC and wacky dress are synonomus! You may want to keep your eyes open for projectile vomiting youngins as well who often troll the taverns, particularly during and after the parade.

Sure hope so. I saw them down in south Fla. had to travel about 4 hours and stayed overnight cause I was shitfaced but It was an awesome concert! I've got the set list framed on my wall. Wish I could make it up north sometime, I bet it is really something! One of the most underrated bands ever IMHO.

I'm only about 25 miles or so to NYC but I plan on getting a room and taking a few days off when they're here in March since I plan on being shitfaced as well.

Hopefully you're flying in on the 12th, so you can make it to RFK for ShamrockFest. Dropkick Murhpys are headlining this year, and other acts worth catching include Scythian and Carbon Leaf.
