The Dublin gig(s) has had very, very little promotion. The average punter probably is not aware of the gig. I've only seen one small ad, lost in the middle of a full page of concerts by UB40, Simple Minds and Spandau Fucking Ballet! All 80's reunion gigs. MCD need to get their fingers out. How much is their cut![]()
Maybe a lot of people are holding back for sat night tickets, so if they were put on sale, it might sell out and then friday may sell as well. Sunday???? I dunno
I tell you what though, and Philip would second this, The Pogues have sold out The Point a couple of years running but the last of the tickets sold on the day of the gig. I don't want to be stereotypical but we're notorious for the attitude of "Ah sure it'll be grand, i'll pick up a ticket nearer the time" And then complain when there's none left
Wait a minute now. I have no intention of getting drawn into this topic, but MCD know what they are doing and always have done. Anyone who has a passing interest in their ever-evolving full page ads of upcoming shows (published in most of the Irish national newspapers) is familiar with the pattern - a couple of small inserts to announce the show(s) are on sale, then the show can often disappear from the advertising for weeks at a time. This pattern will almost certainly continue right up the week of the shows, with add-on nights being announced at strategic intervals. It's all showbiz and it's all holistic, if those terms don't clash too much. MCD has no particular vested interest in a show being a fast sell out, and neither has the band. In MCD's case, they get business brownie points for constantly having a hugely impressive roster of upcoming shows on their press ads, and in the Pogues' case, we have several weeks of valuable promotion of our name at a time when our Christmas record is once again arriving in the public consciousness. Both parties already know the maximum number of shows the band is prepared to do and both parties have already factored in Irish apathy, the recession and all the other mitigating factors that any and all concert tours currently face.
It might surprise you to learn that outside of Medusa, people are not always smart early-responders, that they don't necessarily know that the Pogues now routinely play a Christmas tour in these islands or even that the Pogues still exist at all. Traditionally, after the initial surge of ticket sales, our shows sell only steadily until "Fairytale" makes its annual appearance and gives the box office a significant boost. But you'd be amazed at how many fans I speak to who genuinely don't know The Pogues have been once again a live force since 2001. You only have to look at how risibly often the "Will Shane be there?" question arises, even on Medusa to realise that.
