Have seen the Pogues in Brixton the last 2 years, but have never been to Dublin and discover that they're playing there on my birthday. So I'm willing to push the boat out to get a great hotel - will pay around say £130 or so a night. Have had a really crap year with my mother's death, and with very serious illness myself, so I'm determined this birthday is going to be the best ever to celebrate my still being alive - and Dublin for the 1st time along with the Pogues is the way I want to do it. Any recommendations guys?

I'd say Blooms Hotel. It's just around the corner.

Hi Christine!
Hope you enjoy Dublin! A trawl through Temple Bar is always fun! It will be bloody cold in December so wrap up! For good food at a good price go up to The Bank on Dame St, its great.

I'll second that. It's a fantastic looking (very ornate old bank) place with really good food.

Thank you, thank you! Great response, and one from Mr Chevron no less with Expedia link - how good is that. My problem is that I have no idea of where anything is in Dublin and never quite got to grips with that map-thing (sheer bloody laziness really, always easier to ask someone else). I will certainly hit the Temple area - hang the expense - spend and enjoy your money now and let the Council pay for your nursing home when you get there has become my motto. Thanks again for the responses and good wishes. Roll on 6 December! This is a great forum by the way. Christine

Central Dublin is a small city and you can walk between most places you might wish to go. The Olympia Theatre is at the southern edge of Temple Bar so any hotels in that area will be fine, including Blooms, but be mindful it can get noisy there, especially at weekends. Jury's is still close to the theatre but is in a less congested block. The Gresham is further away, but still within walking distance for most people.

When I stayed in Dublin in April/May to see Shane with Sharon Shannon, I stayed at Grand Canal Hotel, which is like a 15 minute walk into the center and temple bar area. If you can't afford the Temple Bar hotels, that area will be better to stay at and it's quiet too. But be prepared for the walking or just cab it.

If your looking for a lively hotel then you could try the Arlington on the Liffey!!

It gets jumping in there at the weekends!!! :?

We´ve booked a room at The Clifton Court Hotel. Maybe not a top class hotel but what the hell, €308 for one room 4 nights 3 people and a central location. We´re only going to sleep there anyway.

I saw the Twang there on Friday (opening weekend, second gig ) so thought i'd let anyone interested know what its like .
It's layout is very similar to the last one, balcony as before. More bars, a bit easier to get a drink, £3.60/pint though, it aint cheap,
all new and sparkly, great atmosphere, close to hurst street for a pre gig drink and a great atmosphere, it has the makings of a top venue.
The Pogues will be awesome in it, can't wait, Brixton tickets arrived today, been listening to rumsod, love to hear old main drag again this year
