Only eight weeks to go. Ye-Haaaw. Really looking forward to it. My first time to see the Pogues in London.

Derg band secure Pogues slot

The Logues will be hoping to impress the wildman of Irish folk-rock, Shane McGowan later this year when they play The Pogues after-show party.

Hand-picked to provide the post show tunes at The Pogues' annual Christmas concert in Brixton on Saturday December 19, the Castlederg group are also hoping their unique blend of raucous rock will open a few doors in the music business.

"We were contacted through email on our myspace site by the promotion company who are organising the after-show party and they asked us to take part," explained one sixth of The Logues' line-up, Chris Darragh.

"As far as we know it's being organised specifically for Shane McGowan and The Pogues for when they finish playing so they should be there – hopefully anyway.

"The slot is only for half an hour as there are other bands playing.

"It isn't long but we want to do it to put ourselves out there.

"Maybe the next phone call we get will be from the man himself. We just have to take that chance."

Castlederg's most famous musical export started off in 2006 when Christopher 'Beers' Speer got tipsy in a Castlederg watering-hole and booked a band for St Patrick's Day despite not being a member of one. The impromptu group enjoyed the experience so much, they have been at it ever since. Most recently, Kiel Cathers, Justin Logue, Christopher Speer, Gordon Speer, Chris Darragh and Darrell Nelson have been 'flat-out' over the summer months playing six nights a week at festivals and night spots across the country.

"We won't be letting it swell our heads too much," Chris laughed.

"But we're going to play it and see what happens. You never know."

In my opinion this will be one of Jamm's ( a bar up the road from the Academy) spurious after show parties. When a band (not just The Pogues) plays the academy they hold an aftershow party, which while technically correct in the sense that it's after the show, is not what most people would regard as an aftershow. Essentially it means they charge you a tenner to get in the pub to hear a couple of bands you're not interested in on the implied understanding that members of the band that just headlined the academy will be in attendance. Which they won't be. I might be wrong and as I said it's only my opinion.

This is broadly true, and it is a growing trend by no means limited to Brixton. For what it's worth, I've never been to one of these "Aftershow Parties" in my life, which is not to say that one or two other Pogues have not found them to be convenient post-show watering holes. I just resent the implication that they somehow have the formal blessing of the Pogues, who frankly could not give a monkey's flea about them, and the veiled hints that the band might be persuaded to follow a two hour show for which it has been well paid, with a surprise ad hoc gig, just for the hell of it, for which it will work for beer.

This is no reflection on "The Logues", to whom I wish only the best.

I understand that Mad Dog has a t-shirt that has "Shane's just stuck in traffic" emblazoned on it. His friends and neighbours have been waiting patiently for years.

O'Donoghue's is overrated in my book. I'll certainly do most of my drinking at The Celt in Talbot Street. Can't praise that place enough, even after 4 visits to Dublin two years, this will be my fifth. Temple Bar is OK for afterpartys as the pubs outside of that area usually closes down at 11-12 PM.
You also have Fibber McGees at the top of O'Connel Street if you're into Rock\Metal and cheap drinks :)

Well, it's difficult to be certain that anything will definitely occur that far in advance. There is always the ongoing possibility that the world may be eaten by a gigantic alligator from space between now and then. Or some unforeseen event.

Agree with everything said. I recieved an email asking if I'd play said aftershow as well. I did it after Madstock earlier in the year because I'd simply always wanted to meet Shane and hadn't managed to do that. It cost me several hundreds of pounds to go and play the show due to a frankly baffling ticket deal. Ok, I ended up not only meeting Shane but playing 5 songs with him but having been asked again, I've had to refuse it because I don't think it it benefits the musicians who bring the crowd. It really only benefits Shane and fair enough, he's earned the right to do that. I'll be at the show in Brixton Academy, that'll do for me this time.
