Pogues Secret Gig

Post Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:44 pm

It seems the topic "secroit goig" has been locked to deter any further discussion, but I want to say I think we did a great job keeping it quiet. Although Philip had mentioned on this site there might be some pogues involvement (where there is one you will usually find another not far away), there's a big difference between hinting on here that some of the band might show and what actually happened. It was the first time we've played anywhere that size since the band started in '82 and we all had a blast. George Pelecanos, The jesse james Horns, James Walbourne & the intimacy of the venue, all helped make it one of the most exiting show we've done for fucking years. You really had to be there.

Big thanks to everyone at the Boogaloo esp Lou, Gerry, and all Shane's Girls. Our very own Tony Bateman, DJ Scratchy, Eddie, Richard Thomas and the lucky 200 who managed to get in.

The Pogues & George Pelecanos, secret gig 23 July

Post Fri Jul 24, 2009 12:22 am

Just got home, What a night.

George Pelecanos spoke for a short while about the writing of The Way Home, read an extract and answered a few questions. Considering his achievements he seemed like a very humble guy, and a little uneasy under the spotlight. Which i suppose is exactly how i imagined he would be. I've been telling anyone who would listen how great his books are for some time, and maybe following the success of The Wire he'll get the audience he deserves. I hope so.

Half an hour later, Spider Stacy and friends took to the stage, The friends being Shane Macgowan, Jem Finer, Darryl Hunt, Andrew Ranken, James Fearnley, James Walbourne and The Pogues brass section sitting on the windowsill unamplified.

Minus Philip Chevron and Terry Woods, The Pogues played a a pub the size of my local. No mics on the drumkit, no llines out to a massive mixing desk.

And they sounded fucking great.

If my memory serves me well, the setlist was thus.

Body Of an American
Transmetropolitan
Kitty
Down In The Hole (Spider on vocals)
Sally Maclenanne
If I Should Fall From Grace With God

Short but sweet. I was lucky enough to be there thanks to Spider who took the time and trouble to put me on the guest list despite me being too stupid to get a ticket before they all sold out. Theres plenty of bands who bang on about how much they appreciate their fans, but fewer that put their money where their mouth is. Cheers Spider.

I'll echo what trashcity said. Great night, took me back many years seeing them trying to fit on such a tiny stage. Poor Darryl had hardly any room to play tucked in behind Spider and Shane.

I managed to take some short film of Spider singing Down In The Hole and If I Should Fall From Grace . Will upload links when I'm home tonight.

Enjoyed George Pelecancos too.

Thanks guys.

What a great night... I'm sure everyone else had. Like King of the Goons, I stayed in and watched a pirated copy of In the Loop because I felt kind of tired.

As promised here's a link

It's nowhere near the quality of the previous linked videos but it is IFSFFGWG which is missing on the other vids.

These videos are incredible. If i lived anywhere in England i'd of been there. i'm so jealous. The version of Kitty is just beautiful (even though Shane "rearranged" the lyrics) the brass section harmonising with the Boys made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

On this night, less WAS more (not the missing Pogues, but the production).

Amazing.
