I know that myself and all my nutjob friends will most likely be drinking at Asylum (http://www.asylumdc.com) before the show. It's a bit of a hike to the show and the distance might require a cab ride but it's much cheaper than any bar near the club any they've got good inexpensive food. Plus they've got Stiff Little Fingers and the Pogues on the jukebox.

Great! Thanks for the tips.
Asylum is way too far for me personally and Cafe St. Ex seems to open at 5 as well.

And seems nice. Anyone else have thoughts?

EdTheRed-thanks for the updates on Duffys. It would be ideal if something could be worked out. It's location is ideal for sure.

Bars don't open till 8 in DC????

I see "Repeal Of The Licensing Laws" has not yet done its utmost.

I'm not sure exactly how it's broken down in DC, but the best I can figure, in thinking of the places I know, the ones that have kitchens and serve food as well as drink seem to be licensed to open earlier in the day than 8:00.

There may be complexities that are escaping me, but at the moment, based on the examples that come to mind, that's how it breaks down in DC.
Stetson's and Cafe Saint-Ex definitely serve food. Cafe Saint-Ex, though it has a bar, is more of a restaurant than a bar. I'd say that Stetson's is a bar that serves burgers and such.

The neighborhood's not super-sketchy. Cafe Saint-Ex and Stetson's are both on well-lit streets with plenty of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Stetson's is a little further up U Street than "the heart" of the U Street corridor whereas Cafe Saint-Ex is near the center of the action.

Afriend and I will be at the show on the 10th. I have my plane and concert tickets. If y'all set a place for a pre-show gathering be sure to post directions etc. I wouldn't mind hanging out with a few Pogues fans before the show.

Seems no word on Duffy's yet? but that's understandable.

I will be pre drinking here around 5:

It is just a short walk down U street to the 930 club. Less than a mile walk. I would love it if any Pogues members came and had a pint with me!! We can gush about the Pogues over a Guinness. My photo is in the Forum, come and say hi!

On which night, george? Or will you be pre-drinking at Stetson's on both of the nights the Pogues will be in DC?

Heading in on the 10th. I haven't been to the "new" 9:30 since it was WUST Radio Music Hall. Last show I saw there was the Dead Kennedy's back in the 80's. My college roomate is coming to town and we will be taking a cab to the show. Seems like the easiest thing to do.

The "new" 9:30's been around for ten years now. It lacks the seedy charm of the original 9:30 (in the Atlantic Building at 930 F Street NW), but if you don't allow yourself to do a lotta direct comparisons between the two 9:30s, I think you'll find it to be OK.

The bands who've played both places seem to be in unanimous agreement when it comes to bein' relieved that the club didn't move the notoriously huge alley rats from 930 F Street to 815 V.

Man, I always thought those were racoons or something, they were so big...

Also, the new club lacks the same, uh, "musk" of patchouli, clove cigarettes, stale beer, staler vomit, and that weird disinfectant they used to clean up said beer and vomit. There was no hiding where you'd been after a show at the old club!

The new place, however, is a much more comfortable place to see a show, and the acoustics and sound system are top notch.

I just sent an e-mail to Andy Duffy (the owner of Duffy's Irish Restaurant). My guess is that, due to all of the delays they've faced, they won't be ready to host anything next week, but I figured I'd ask. I'll post as soon as I get a reply.

As an alternative meet-up location, I'd recommend The Saloon, at 1207 U St., just a few blocks from the 9:30 Club. Good selection of beers, including some pretty interesting draft (or draught, depending on where you're from) options, plus a comfortable atmosphere.

Okay, got a response, and unfortunately, Duffy's can't even host private parties until they officially get their liquor license, which they will have in a few weeks, but not by next Thursday...so we're on to Plan B.

I nominate The Saloon, but I'm flexible. Any other proposals?

There is always DC9..

Post Fri Mar 03, 2006 11:58 pm

It is on 9th just about 2 blocks south of the 9:30.
1940 9th st NW.

They have beer, booze and food. It is dark and has an excellent juke. And I think they are open at 5 for happy hour.

Another thing that was a staple of the 930 F Street location and is absent from the 815 V Street club is the pizza that sits untouched on the bar, apparently because the class of liquor license the bar had required 'em to offer food as well as drink. You'd have to have been really fucking desperate to eaten a slice of 9:30 Club pizza...

Oh wow you're right. They just started having a happy hour I read. Starting at 5.
That is a great place.

The Saloon looks better than my suggestion of Stetson's as well. Ahhh too many choices.

Meeting Place on the 9th

Post Tue Mar 07, 2006 4:41 pm

My wife and I are coming from out of town and would love to meet up with folks going to the show on the 9th. Is there a consensus as to where most people will meet up on the 9th?
Cheers!
