Spider on vocals

Post Thu Jan 24, 2019 5:59 pm

Having only ever seen the band live with Shane on vocals pre his departure (1998) and since his return (2007 & 2009), the following thought/question occurred to me recently while listening to some early audio gig footage where Spider sings along with him on "Waltzing Matilda".

During Spiders tenure as lead vocalist when the band were on tour did he stick to doing stuff from Waiting For Herb and Pogue Mahone or did he ever do "traditional Shane" songs similar to the way Joe did when he was frontman?

Spider sang songs from the full catalog.

Shane departed in 91 and returned 10 years later

Bad construction of the sentence on my behalf Ciderman !

What I meant was 1998,2007 & 2009 were the years I saw them live. I never saw them live during Spiders tenure as lead vocalist although I did get WFH & PM on CD when they were released.

(I also saw Shane live a couple of times between 1991 & 2001 in Dublin)

Two more questions while I'm here for those more knowledgeable than I on these matters.

(1) How many times did the band play Ireland during Spiders tenure as lead vocalist?

(2) Are there any links to set lists for all gigs the band played during Spiders tenure as lead vocalist?

I'm really intrigued to hear Spiders version of songs from the catalogue prior to those that feature on WFH & PM but I'll pursue that elsewhere.

Cheers

Off the top of my head, i'm not sure if they played Ireland. It's sad that pogueslive.com is gone - there was a fairly comprehensive list of gigs up there. If anybody has that data saved somewhere, maybe we could get it up somewhere here (by "we" i mean, of course, DzM, 'cause i'm sure he's got nothing but time :) )

However, there is at least one sample setlist from 1993 up on this site: http://www.pogues.com/Releases/Disco/Bootlegs.html

PEST OF THE ROGUES - Live in Europe, 1993
If I Should Fall From Grace With God / Sayonara / Young Ned of the Hill / Pachinko / Gartloney Rats / Turkish Song Of The Damned / Once Upon A Time / Modern World / Rain Street / Tuesday Morning / Sitting On Top Of The World / Medley / Girl From The Wadi Hammamat / Dirty Old Town / The Sunnyside Of The Street / Yeah Yeah YeahYeah Yeah / The Star Of County Down / Hell's Ditch / Fiesta

So Spider sings everything Shane would have sung. What was interesting about these shows - and to be honest some of the last of Shane's tenure with the band - was that the setlist featured a lot of songs that had originally featured other members on lead vocals anyway.

Hey thanks for the link - that's my money's worth for my $5.00 annual donation to archive.org right there!

So looks like they played at *least* one, on 03 July 1993 at the Fleadh Mor, Tramore, Waterford, Ireland.

Great resource.

Thanks Patrice and everyone else for your replies.

Looking through this archive it appears that "Love You 'Till The End" was never done live.

Is this correct or have I missed it ?

*As a postscript I have come across numerous ladies who know this song, love it, but didn't know it was a Pogues tune (until I told 'em!) because it featured in the movie PS I LOVE YOU :D

Pretty sure "Love You 'Till the End" was done on the Pogues second US reunion tour in 2007. (Sorry Daryl, it was my bathroom break song...)

I was forgetting that pogueslive.com is a listing of all gigs of which there are recordings and not a listing of all gigs.

That said I did actually miss one.

Roseland Ballroom, Manhattan, New York, USA. 16th March 2008.

I was super certain. Then you made me question myself and think really hard about it. Turns out I was thinking of "Tuesday Morning" the whole time. I'm a dumbass.

Maybe I heard it back in '96 at the Warfield.

Here's 2009 at the Warfield. No "Love..." to be had.
