LAST GIG WITH SHANE

Post Fri Jan 23, 2009 4:10 pm

Continuing with my 'last' theme (last song recorded with Shane on the other page). Does anyone know when and where the last gig (pre reunion) with Shane was? I remember going to the Royal Court Liverpool on 6th December 1991 and everybody saying that Shane wont be there (I presume he had done a couple of no shows before this) and low and behold he was and it was a great gig :D

I think I´m confused now about the dates - wasn´t Joe Strummer up front by December 1991? As far as I know, Shane´s last show with us was in Tokyo, widely available on both audio and video bootlegs.

As ever, I make no claims to be an authority on the matter.

Mmmm I do remember seeing a Joe Strummer gig as well so maybe im getting mixed up but im sure Shane ws there (but I could quite easily be wrong) I only recall it so well (or not) becuase it was my 21st Birthday and I spent the whole day in Flannigans in Mathew Street (when it was a really really good pub) and then went to the Royal Court. When was the Japan gig??

You´re a better man than I, Gunga Din, if you can remember your 21st. No wait, actually, I can, I was overdubbing stuff on The Radiators´"Faithful Departed" at Tony Visconti´s Good Earth studios in Dean Street that day. However, my recall is less clear as the years advance, so someone else will tell you when the Tokyo show happened.

The more I think about it, though, the more I fall in favour of my own instincts. December 1991 was the first reissue of "Fairytale", wasn´t it? The main reason Shane and Kirsty appeared on Top Of The Pops without us was our mutual decision to make a clean break rather than confuse the issue. It is unlikely, therefore, that he would have come on tour with us.

According to my records. such as they are, the show we recorded on that tour for a possible live album took place on December 12, 1991at the Forum, Kentish Town. Joe sang If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Sayonara, Rain Street, Turkish Song Of The Damned, London Calling, The Sunnyside Of The Street, Straight To Hell, Dirty Old Town,
The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn, I Fought The Law, Hell`s Ditch, Brand New Cadillac and Fiesta. Andrew, myself and Spider did numbers too and Terry did several. No sign of Shane. That would appear to be the definitive answer.

The album remains unmixed, apart from the two songs on the Box Set.

I saw The Pogues + Joe Strummer on October 6 or 7, 1991 at the Warfield in San Francisco. Shane was out of the band at that point, though Joe was still saying "I'm just keeping the seat warm."

If you mean the last gig before sack notice (or whatever you call it) - 30th Aug 1991. Could be the last gig with classic line up as well.
But I believe Shane chrashed Pogues parties cupla times later, like in 1994, or that farewell London gig in July 1996.

Well, Pogueslive.com, who maybe CAN claim to be an authority on the matter, has it as 30-Aug-91 Womad Festival, Yokohama, Japan. It was broadcast on TV or something, and as Philip mentioned, exists as a widely distributed bootleg. I"ve seen it, and while Shane's performance may be lacking, i remember thinking how damn good the rest of the band were, esp. Spider on the whistle.

Am I right in saying that when Joe took over that there where some gigs that he couldnt commit to and the duties where shared so to speak in those gigs? Everytime I think back to that Dec 91 though I can pitcure Shane but im obviously have it perminantly mixed up in my brain now ha ha. When did Spider take over as jockey?????

The ninth anniversary of the Pogues the band and Shane celebrated separately

Funny.. Fans who had obtained tix months before, when Shane was still with The Pogues, were quite surprised by his absence. For rather a long time there was no any official signal regarding the band’s and its frontman’s decision to part their ways. And definitely there were no statements on split up after that meeting at Darryl’s hotel room on the 31st of Aug or before USA/Canada dates in September. What there was a lot of was talks about temporal vacation, resting for imminent future, hints at health issues, problems with touring and lack of Shane's interest. And rumours, rumours, rumours - tons of them.. So it was up to fans what to make out of it. During the next year or two many of them were still hoping for Shane’s glorious come back. And maybe only solo acts of both sides (tours, records, deals) opened fans’ eyes and put dots over “i”s.

Joe lent his throat and other talents for 6 month and carried out USA/Canada (Sept-Oct, 1991), Europe (Oct-Nov, 1991), UK/Irealand (Nov-Dec,1991) and Japan (Mar,1992) dates during that period. But he wasn’t the only vocalist, others shared the duty with him during the same shows. Spider included. Then (i.e. spring 1992) Spider became the main singer, with Terry doing a lot of vocals as well.

I don't know the exact date of the last gig, but on Youtube there are some videos of one of the last gigs with Shane. Just type "The Pogues Japan 1991" and you'll find them. Unfortunately, the quality is poor, but it's a Pogues gig, so who cares. You can actually hear that Shane is quite out of it, if you compare it to earlier Pogues shows, for example Live at T & C 1988 or earlier ones as well. He looks a bit different as well, with a huge beard and hawaii shirt. But the rest of the band is in great form on those videos. Well, check it out if you don't know it, good stuff!
