I haven't heard of Aria, but that Ibanez looks pretty good. Really the only cheap guitar I know about is the Dean Playmate since I fucked about with them at the music store before lessons. Now, I do reccomend buying an average guitar like Tyler said, but if you had to go with a bit of a cheaper guitar, I know that the Playmate would probably be what I'd reccomend, not that I'd really reccomend getting any cheap guitars, but if that is all you can really afford, I'd go with it. Now, if you do get a Playmate, be sure that you don't get some sort of half-sized, because Playmate has a lot of miniature and smaller sized ones.

From a purely visual standpoint, that Aria looks decent, but some of the best-sounding instruments look like shit and the fancy ones play like shit, so you can't always say based on looks alone.

Philip, did ya have a mentor, teacher for guitar, from the point zero or ya learned completely on yar own, step by step?

This is a hard one. I started to get comfortable (sorry i'm Swedish) Höörrrr, Hööööööörrrr.. with just to sitt and fool around with the guitarr. I started to copy music-"slings" or the mellody of a song and tried to get it from there. I still go practice my chordes whith a teacher, and then i've been playing for about 17 years now... But, take it to a (or somewhat) kin'a teacher, just my advise. Good Luck!

Of course not: some of them seem quite cool actually. As a general rule, always buy the best guitar you can afford. Using this rule of thumb, my first guitar cost 30 shillings (£1.50) from Roches Stores in 1968 or so,
but I had to mow a lot of lawns to save up that much. Anyway, it gave me great service for a few years and it was only much later I realised it was a pile of crap.
I stole mine from me sister.... ;)

that Dean model was sadly pulled outta sale.. twas' the noicest green lookin' model oi found on-loine.. don't know why thois happened

oi pulled some more resources by now but oi stoill haven't bought anythoing.. tis' mainly due to reason oim in great rush in recent days, oi should probably move soon and stuff..

oif someone can tell me, is there a way to use guitar tabs(convert them) for 5-stroings banjo? oi mean theres lots of tabs and resources and material for guitar.. oif oi decoide to buy 5 stroings banjo in the future after learning to cope woith the guitar, woill oi be able to somehow convert guitar tabs and manage to pull it off on banjo? oi ask thois due to fact oi probably won't easily foind banjo tabs for Shaneo's and Pogues' songs..

Well Oirish,

I'd first start learning guitar and when you think you can play that, try banjo. But then, don't try any tabs. I hardly eve use them because you'll create your own stye anyway and figuring out the notes yourself is much more educational than finding them on the net

Thanks for advoice Mick. Yup, oi do plan to learn guitar foirst and when oi manage it, then to thoink of buying a banjo. About the tabs.. yes, oi agree, the best stuff really is to see musician who can catch and play the new song, song never practoised before, and play it just by loistening to original - woithout using any tabs - but doesn't that take years and experience? Oi've seen surely people who need nothing of the tabs and on the other hand oi've seen guitar players who can't do anythoing woithout the tabs and paper in front of them, before they manage and learn to do it. One needs the ear, in a manner of speaking, to be adjusted to chords and to easily resolve it into playing without the tabs - oim speaking about playing new songs that musician starts to play for the 1st toime! Oi can't start learning the guitar without the tabs, roight? Isn't the soimilar situation woith banjo, cause its a new instrument after? Or oi would have advantage of played guitar, so oi moight resolve chords on banjo without lookin' for tabs?

Jem taught himself to play banjo by tuning it to the top 5 strings of a guitar and then retuned when he more or less had the hang of the right hand fingering.

I have just stumbled across this thread. I am learning electric guitar with a tutor. The book/dvds have all been useless. I have been practising about 4 hours a day and it is amazing how quick you can learn. It is true you do get out only what you put in. Apparently i have nimble (girly) fingures and have quicly learnt all chords/barrs/power chords. The one thing you need is a good electric tuner. I find pitch pipes/relative tuning impossible for a beginer.

DownInTheGround, ya started learnin' on electric guitar before learning acoustic? Have ya played anythoing before? What toime it took ya to poick up basic chords & start playin' basic tunes?

Oim stoickin' to oidea to get that Epiphone!
Philip's recommendation means a lot, Andy P. Davies also had noice words about Epiphone.. reviews are good too!
Hopefully oi won't buy sth else due to over 400$ fortune oi have to spend :D Oi could check in the Serbian stores, to see maybe they have it(althogh chances are probably zero) or they can order it cheaper.. and to see whats in that proice range.. but in general epiphone is me choice at thois toime!
