pogues24 wrote:Philip what was your inspiration for writing this beautiful number. I read somewhere that is was about your boyfriend at the time. I also read in the new Carol Clerk book that the producers and management wanted to remove this fantastic song from the original track listing of Peace and Love.

Well, there's not much to say except that you're correct on both counts. I've always been drawn to mythology, especially where rivers and/or oceans are involved. The Lorelei is the siren whose beautiful song lures mariners to their death on the rocks of the river Rhine.

But we played Ludo and watched TV sometimes also.

Thanks for posting this Philip. I edited this page so that any reader would be clear on who deserves credit for the song...

Why did they want it removed? Along with Young Ned and White City I reckon it's one of the stand out tracks on Peace and Love

Agreed. :D

I never understood why people took a dislike to it.

I include Lorelei on every Pogues mix CD I make.

You can add me to the list of Lorelei fans... I love it. That moment when the vocal comes in for the opening line... magical.

It's one of my favourite tracks off Peace and Love -- it has the kind of opening that makes me look up every time!

I kinda can understand why people might not like it, it is pretty different to all previous Pogues stuff (although then again so is most of Peace and Love, but Lorelei especially) but I think its good anyway.

Me too. Its a higher pitch ballad thing. It also doesn't tell much more of a story than the whole - these rocks and the angst associated with them (sorry Phillip :) ) thing.

I like the song. But I have short ribs cooking ...........

German Grand Prix d´Eurovision band Dschinghis Khan once did a song called "Lorelei", too. Same topic, but in fact more light-hearted, especially musically. It´s not really a bad song as the tune is pretty good, but it surely isn´t a patch on Mr Chevron´s song.

Wonderful song, and knowing the story behind it makes it somehow even better. I'd love to hear it done live...
