Very sad news for me, may you Rest in Peace Philip ! Your Concerts in Berlin were legendary.

One of the coolest things that ever happened to me was getting an email through Amazon from Philip. Eleven years ago I wrote a review on Amazon for "Straight To Hell," a movie they made which is near and dear to me and a bunch of friends from college when we discovered the VHS of it at a convenience store. We have held "Straight To Hell" parties for years, drinking coffee (spiked), watching the movie, quoting every line, singing every song. Philip Chevron actually saw the review, titled "The Greatest Work of Art Since The Vagina." Here's what he wrote, and this is, no shit, from him:

That's about the best review Straight To hell ever had!! I think I can just
about remember my line: "I...I...I can't do it Willy! Go on...get outta
here!" And then he shoots me! Subtext? Of course: I was in love with him!
Though I don't suppose that nuance shone through, huh? And there wasn't
much in the way of outtakes, incidentally. Unless you count the
camels....imported from Morocco at great expense and given their pink
papers after two days. I missed 'em, I must say. We spent the whole movie
drunk as skunks but it was a lot of fun watching fantasy blend into reality
and back again!!

That was really cool of him, thanks for sharing that email. I never noticed any hint of that subtext though, I'll have to watch it again. I just thought it was meant to be funny because the McMahon family saw themselves as so tough and badass, and Phil as Ed acted like he'd never used a gun much less killed someone. Anyway, he played it perfectly so that it was funny and sad, too, since getting killed by someone whose life you'd just spared pretty much guarantees instant pathos if it's played well. I also loved that his name was Ed McMahon like the celebrity host/publisher's clearing house guy.

And yes, I hope that you're getting some well-deserved peaceful rest, Phil, and that all the love from this thread and this crazy world is floating on up to you wherever you are.

I think it was Spider who once compared the atmosphere at a Pogues gig in Glasgow to being at a Glasgow Celtic football game. The difference being the crowd were cheering for the same team. I felt the same whenever I saw the band play. The Pogues command a following many football teams would envy both in number and passion. In the mid 1980's I heard Team Pogue and I was hooked. To me, first and foremost, Philip Chevron was a key player in that team. As years passed, I learned of his other work, heard anecdotes from people on how he influenced them, and of his humanity.

I was lucky to be at the Philip Chevron Testimonial a few short weeks ago. The depth of respect and love for Philip in the Olympia defies description. It also brought home to me that Philip played with many other teams than Team Pogue. He'll be sorely missed by teammates, friends, fans but most of all by his family. A legend has passed. A legacy endures.

i only heard today , what a top man .
Although i cant say i really knew Mr Chevron i somehow feel close to him, met him only once but exchanged a few PM's with him and after telling him of my marriage to my long term partner he dedicated Thousands to us a few years ago at the Greenwich gig, what a great night we had , last gig for me was Strummer of Love and i'll remember that one for ever , tiny crowd stood right in front of Phil.
the last message i had from Phil was when i heard of the illness being fatal and i explained i hadn't been on the raft much as i'd been going through a rocky time and i'd lost my mum, this was part of his reply

Loss does indeed change us all irrevocably, but I'm not sure it's for the worse.
