Phil, hope you're in good form today. Christy Moore's tribute gig to you was a cracker, the place was jammers and full of good vibes. Was very moved by the gig and my memories of all those times seeing you live and also you taking the time to sign autographs for me outside the Olympia on the coldest and wettest days of the year. After a beautiful and funny introduction, Christy tore into Faithful Departed and it sounded out of this world. All of Whelans joined in to sing Molly Malone together for you...a beautiful touch, there was magic in the air. Looking forward to seeing you in the Olympia.

I also wanted to try and tell you how much your songs mean to me. The lyrics you're written will be sung forever I'm sure. Faithful Departed and Thousands are Sailing works of sheer genius. Thanks for writing to me a few years ago - I asked you what plec you used so you sent me one - such a great gesture and still a treasured possession. Thanks for always being on here with wit and insights. Thanks for the incredible music. Christy said he was sending you on a copy of the gig, so you'll have heard all the shouts of what we were all thinking: We love you Phil.

Thank you. I have heard only the greatest reports from the gig and remain gobsmacked that Christy did it and that so many people supported it and joined in the spirit of the evening. I could not myself be there but in any event would have cried off, I think. Everyone means really well but I'm too unwell for hugs and clinches. I will almost certainly be at the Olympia but that's because it's easier to hide away there if I need to. Whether or not I put in a short appearance on stage is down to whatever delicate arrangement I can do with my medication on the night, primarily with my steroids!! But anyway, thank you for your kind words and keep that plectrum safe for me.

 Steroids ?

I guess there will have to be an asterisk next to your name when you are inducted into the hall of fame.

Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

Hi Phil
you won't remember me but I was one of the many people at many of your gigs
who was lucky enough to get a handshake and a kind word, your were especially
kind when you noticed at one gig that I wasn't very well, thank you.
Your songs hold such meaning for me and everyone who has heard them.
We have both had similar treatments at similar times and both received the all clear on the same day
so I hear what you are saying and I wish you good days when the drugs do their job but don't smother your creativity and personality.
The gig in Whelan's was a wonderful tribute to you and all that you have given to all of us.
Be strong
God Bless

Philip, I briefly met you in Chicago back in 1989, I think. It was at Poplar Creek, the first stop on a tour involving Mojo Nixon, the Pogues, and the Violent Femmes. I had gotten a comp from a friend who was touring with the Femmes, but frankly, I wasn't all that interested in them. I brought along the jacket to If I Should Fall from Grace, hoping I might score an autograph. Someone pointed out you and Andrew sitting out in the seats, and I approached with some hesitation. Philip, you were quite gracious, and readily signed, complete with a treble clef forming the P and C in your name. Andrew was a bit more reserved (in truth, I don't recall him saying anything), but he too was gracious in signing. Later on, one of your roadies saw me, and managed to procure additional signatures, but I must say our brief conversation, touching on the soon to be released "Peace and Love" was probably the highlight of the trip. Come to think of it, I also recall you guys more or less blasting the Femmes off the stage...

It is interesting to wonder just how many asterisks would be needed to supply the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame ...

Did the old songs taunt or cheer you
And did they still make you cry
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry

Ah, no, says he, 'twas not to be
On a coffin ship I came here
And I never even got so far
That they could change my name

Been a fan as long as I can remember. The one and only time I had the honour of meeting you was in 1988 when I filmed the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday gig in The Gaiety along with Sinead O'Connor and the great Rory Gallagher . Wishing you all of the best from Cape Town. Adam

Hello Phil,

I have just looked on the Pogues website and I’m shocked and saddened to hear your illness has returned. Both my parents fought valiantly against the disease so I know just how trying and draining it can be.
I would just like to thank you once again for all the wonderful music and memories you have provided me with. I know it’s a cliché but you were a huge part of the soundtrack of my life.
I travelled from Shetland on a number of occasions to see you and the band. It was mainly to Glasgow where, through the forum, you very kindly organised after show passes for me and my friends. I will never forget that you took the time out to do that for me, given you must have been busy travelling between gigs, sound checking etc. Those nights in Glasgow will live long in my memory. I never met you after the shows to thank you personally but I’ve always held you in high regard.
I hope you continue to fight on and I dearly hope and wish that I have the opportunity to see you back playing once again.
I also send my best wishes to you for your testimonial concert and for what is bound to be a joyful yet emotional experience.
Thank you once again Phil for all that you’ve done and the memories you’ve given me.
I hope my thoughts, love and best wishes travel to you from Shetland.

How are you Philip, hope you're coping alright. Doesn't matter what I write, it seems pathetic and useless under the circumstances, but anyway, thinking of you xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
