The Prisoners.. one of the greatest bands all time! Check out thewisermiserdemelza & 7.. It is the one Mr. Chevron produced.. Hurricane and Coming Home are terrific.. Was this the only one you produced for them?

It's the only one I got to do yes. They fired me after it because they didn't like my work. They changed their minds about that years later and some of them have conceded that The Wisermiserdemelza is their best album, which it certainly is. The main problem at the time appeared to be that it took a week to make. Their friends The Milkshakes scoffed they could have made 7 albums in that time, which is certainly true too, but hardly the point. Peer pressure is a powerful thing when you're young. The one song I really wanted to produce for The Prisoners after this album was "Whenever I'm Gone", because I was certain I was hearing a No 1 single with the right producer. The LAST thing the Prisoners wanted to hear was that they might have a No 1 single. Strange boys. I liked them though. The keyboard player James Taylor plays on The Pogues "First Day Of Forever".

They certainly were - I found them awe-inspiring and of course they went on to become one of the most influential bands of all time too. They were so naturally great that they took offence if, as producer, one tried to raise them to even greater heights. (ie "That was great guys, now do it again please") This was especially true of their singer/guitarist/writer Graham Day. "You want me to sing it again?? What was wrong with the way I just sang it??" Nothing, Graham, I just believe you can do it even better. Oh.

I recently came across an interview on line where Graham talks about this with the rueful and affectionate wisdom only middle-age can bring.

Indeed Mr. Chevron!! Everyone should own at least one Prisoners LP / CD.. It's interesting that James Taylor played with the Pogues. I really liked what he did after the Prisoners split with the Clique and then on to form JTQ.. The first album Blow up was simply amazing. I also liked what Graham Day did with the Prime Movers and now the Solarflares.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Pogues and Prisoners also appear on a compilation together called "Don't let the Hope Close Down" with other greats, the Milkshakes, TMTCH, Boothill Foottappers, etc.. Hunt it down and stick it on the player! It even gets my old feet a tapping :D :D

That is my favorite TMTCH CD and I do remember reading the insert about you producing a lot of the songs. I don't know why it slipped my mind. I usually remember these things. :? Great job Mr. C!! :D

Since bought some of the Prisoners cds.(In From The Cold , The Last Fourfathers, The WiserMiser Demelza & 7 ) Must say the Chevron produced tracks are by far the most polished . The band has a strong Charlatans sound (chicken & egg / who came first ) with the swirling organ, but also sound a bit like the Jam on the more guitars driven tracks .

Also bought the Lash Lariart & The Long Riders 7" Dole Queue Blues .
I realy like this and must look out for more of the same.

The Prisoners indisputably came before the Charlatans, as the latter will tell you.

The Charlatans came out of a band called Makin Time which were around at the same time as the Prisoners were.. Graham Day went on to marry Fay Hallam from Makin Time.. whom by the way can also play the organ quite well.. :D IMHO the Prisoners were 10 years ahead of their time and would put most "British Pop" bands of the 9ts to shame..

Mr. C

The Tall Boys Fun Time record is one of my all-time favorites..

Nigel is a top songwriter. He's got a new release coming out next week, I think. With his new band.. Nigel Lewis and the Zorchmen. 2 discs, one he recorded all by himself, and one disc recorded live in Hamburg.
