If that's the clip I think it is (it's floating around the Horslips website too) it's from the South Bank Show in a 1990 episode. It was filmed during the making of Hell's Ditch and that's the courtyard of Rockfield Studios. Unless I'm mistaken, there is some film of us recording the album in the same programme.

I wish that people who upload videos on you tube would bother uploading the whole lot. tut tut. I like the Christy Moore Baron Raggle Taggle Gypsy.

And Philip, Nottingham Forest - why oh why?

Simon, it's a long story really, but thanks to long-term Forest fan Darryl Hunt, I first saw them play in the 88/89 season when they had their Stuart Pearce-led glory team. In keeping with all the doctrines and theologies advanced by the late Mr Clough, they played football on the ground ("If God had meant us to play football in the air, he'd have put a pitch up there" - Clough) in a beautiful, confident, fluid passing motion that I found completely beguiling. With the hard-but-fair ethic and workrate of Pearce to spur them on, I had never seen anything as graceful or athletic in my life.

Ok, I know that's not how they play these days, and there are teams I'd rather watch, but old loyalties die hard. Stuart remains a friend (and a Pogues fan) and is mentioned in The Radiators from Space song "Joe Strummer". I had the great pleasure of introducing Greatest Living Englishman Pearce to (then) Greatest Living Englishman Strummer to each other in a Pogues' dressing room in Derby. Only one of them had not heard of the other at that point. None of this is in the song, by the way.

If, on the other hand, you are asking "Why the Nottingham Forest top in that Rockfield film?", well, it's what I was wearing that day. It was during the 1990 World Cup. That IS in "Joe Strummer"

I just watched the interview - fantastic! Thanks very much Simon for posting it. And even more thanks to Philip for doing it. That was as informative an insight into the growth and development of the Irish music scene, with particular reference to the liberation of Irish traditional musical culture, as I have ever seen anywhere. Nice hat Philip. Thank you. :D

Do you or Daryll get to see them much these days, Philip ? They seem to be turning the corner a bit now after some desperate times (even dare I say it - a fall from grace ?)

Stuart Pearce is a Pogues fan - the bloke just gets better and better !

Well Darryl spends a lot of time in Germany these days, so is more likely to see Bayern Munich play, I think. When I am in Nottingham, I live just around the corner so I see some games, yes.

Great clip Simon Maguire. With me, I grew up ignoring Irish music that my grandparents, uncles and aunts played at family gatherings while being drunk out of their minds. It almost scared me from wanting to go to any other family event...but I had no choice. I think it was those Accordions playing all in unison with each other (Paddy Noonan style) that got me to hate that music. As well as the fact that the music was too perfect or something...no room for any musician to add their own style and influence to the sound. Very dull - Very boring! The Pogues changed all that for me. I later went on to listen to Christy Moore (his solo stuff and with Planxty), Chieftains and of course, the Dubliners. The Dubliners were the only bunch of guys I liked that my grandparents played. They were rough around the edges, which I like.
