If you listen carefully, you may also be able to detect Sean O'Riada's "Mna na hEireann" (Women of Ireland) in the guitar figure going into the choruses ("River, river.....") but Steve Lillywhite mixed that lower than I would have liked.

If I were you, I would have sneaked into the control room and bring that fader up a little more when Lillywhite wasn't looking. That's the only way you'll get it the way you want...LOL! No one will ever know!

I didn't know anything about the background to this beautiful song so thanks to all - most especially, Philip - for sharing such personal information. The tune has a magical, sensuous quality and Philip's vocal has a rich, erudite and controlled quality on what is one of the stand-out songs on Peace and Love.
Unlike many of the other excellent songs on the Peace and Love album - Lorelei seems less hampered than others with what I would describe as an extremely 'muddy' production in which there is little 'separation' between instruments and voices and vocals - particularly Shane's - are often buried. 'London You're a Lady' being perhaps the most pertinent example of 'muddiness' - but maybe it is just my vinyl copy that makes it sound like that?

When I was 19 I was living in Hawaii for a few months and learned to play guitar. Lorelei is my favorite song off Peace and Love and was one of the first songs I learned to play.

The chords I used were my best guess from listening to the album. My friend and I spent many evenings sitting on a wall in Kona playing your song for people leaving the bars. I'm sure I destroyed it but we did our best.

I've lost my entire music collection so many times from continually re-locateing- (various continents & now here in western massachusetts, from N.Y.); that i don't even think about buying music again. I found myself in Herman Melville's workroom beside the desk at which he wrote "Moby Dick or; The White Whale"- in 1850 /at his home (Arrowhead) in Pittsfield just last week. From Melville's study window, Mount Greylock (the Berkshire Mountains) looks like the hump of a huge whale riseing out of the sea. My heart & head swirrled back to LORELEI !!!

As I think I've mentioned before on these forums, Lorelei has always been one of my favorite Pogues songs yet it doesn't seem to be one that makes the set list often, if at all. Is there a reason for this? My good friends named their daughter Lorelei after the song and we'll be at the March 5th Chicago show. Any chance of sneaking it in?

The chords in that link seem correct to me, though any time I have sung it in recent years (guesting with The Woods Band, for example) I dropped the key to D but actually played it in C with a capo on the second fret. So it's C F C Am Em G Dm G Dm G etc

Sorry I didn't see this thread before. "Lorelei" is unlikely to make a reappearance in the Pogues show, at least not without sacrificing "Thousands Are Sailing".

Such a sacrifice would be unacceptable, in my opinion. How about we turn the clocks in the venue back 3 minutes and thirty-three seconds after the show starts so that there would be 'time' enough to squeeze it in?

Philip what was your inspiration for writing this beautiful number. I read somewhere that is was about your boyfriend at the time. I also read in the new Carol Clerk book that the producers and management wanted to remove this fantastic song from the original track listing of Peace and Love.
