The Radiators from Space pictured (by Gareth Averill) in Moore Street, Dublin, 2012. The site behind - Plunkett's - is the "Irish Alamo", the last stand of the Rebels of the Easter 1916 Rising. Surrender papers were drafted and approved here after the nearby General Post Office, in flames had to be abandoned. The subsequent executions of the leaders of the Rising decisively turned public opinion against Britain and this led, after much more bloodshed and a Civil War, to the Independence of 26 of the 32 counties of Ireland.
Despite many public and private efforts to save the historic site, it appears increasingly doomed to the wrecking ball. There is a sense only that health and safety conditions may force people's hands before any sensitive political decisions must be faced.
