A thousand hours of trying to find the right thing to say results in nothing. I am listening to your version of The Captains & The Kings right now. The Pogues are grand band of course, and the music is great; but you made me feel like it was appreciated that we are all still so into the whole thing. I pray to fly anywhere in the world to see you perform again. As much as I can send, I send to you.

I'm very much in denial about this, so I hope to wake up and find it's not true, but in the meantime while I'm still in this bad dream, I'll just send you lots of love and hope that you defy the diagnosis! Doctors are ultimately just people, too, so they can be wrong and I hope they are!

When I first heard this news, I sat, stunned, at the kitchen table at 6 AM. I poured my first thoughts into a rambling post, that somehow disappeared when i hit 'send'. Its been weeks and I still can't manage to recreate those words. Thanks for the years of music and generosity, Philip - My kids were raised on The Pogues, and our grandchildren will be singing your songs. I still hope to have a chance to shake your hand one day. Apparently I missed you by mere minutes in New York. I was in Paris in April, and had a drink in a pub with Lionel Grosheny from Polydor. He was instrumental in putting together the Paris concerts, and spoke of what a fine gentleman you are. The 'reunited' years have seen some glorious moments and I am so glad that the latest era of The Pogues has been documented on those DVD's. Sending lots of love your way...

Mr. Chevron, I'm not really a frequent poster anymore, just read this news the other day, and don't really know you except for some brief exchanges here. But, for what it's worth, your music made my life a better thing and you were always courteous and giving beyond what any of us should expect. Even when I was shouting at you from some front row. So allow me to say thank you for all that, and I trust all your days will be filled with music, warmth and love.

All the best,
mrdarcey

Philip,

I'm shamefully late in coming across this news, but I still feel compelled to speak up and reiterate all the oh-so-appropriate platitudes: "Thank you", "You and your music have meant so much to me", "The Pogues changed my life", etc, etc. And yet, despite the oft-repeated nature of such words, I can only hope that you don't feel that the emotions behind them are diminished at all, because they're not...I suspect that they are as raw and vivid to each and every other person that has uttered them as they are to me.

From the first time I visited the Medusa, I was amazed and enamored with your openness, your wit, and your respect for the fans. The fact that twice you were kind enough to add my name to guest lists at shows here in the US (Kansas City in '09 and Chicago in '11) despite not knowing me from Adam spoke volumes about your generosity (and, judging by the attitude of the girl at The Congress in Chicago who told me "Philip Chevron added EVERYONE to the fucking guest list", your willingness to stick a finger in the eye of "proper" musician/fan relations), and that's something I'll never forget.

I know you've said you don't want sympathy, so let me just say this one last thing....go boldly my friend, go boldly.
Have you heard about the big strong man?

I'm sitting here in California having just read the PDFs of the interview with Mr. C. and I am stunned and heartbroken. Somehow this had all flown under my radar since the news came out.

But despite the sadness, at the same time I am also filled with admiration for a man who is continuing to live his life on his terms.

Mr. C, in lieu of pity or sympathy, so instead let me offer my thanks. Thanks for sharing your talent with us. Thanks for being so friendly, open and available to answer our questions about music, the Pogues, the Radiators, et. al. Thanks for writing "Thousands" and pouring your heart into it on stage. Thanks for being willing to throw us on your pass list despite, as Mike M. said above, you not knowing us from Adam.

Philip...Thank you for you great wit, your intellect and your truths. Today, I wish for you life's tiny joys. A touch, a smile and most of all, great and unending love from all those who you have journeyed along this life with. x

Phil
So so sorry to hear this terrible news. As a frequent visitor to this site but infrequent poster, I have always been so blown away by your commitment to the fans. When I asked on the off chance in 2010 if I could have back stage area tickets for the terminal 5 gig in New York as I was already there visiting family, you responded immediately straight away saying they be on the door. I was slightly unsure when we arrived, but was totally chuffed when myself and the wife arrived and were given bands for VIP area passes. You made our night, and we were eternally grateful. A true gent.

It's been years since I logged into this account, but I take strength from Mr. Chevron's music almost daily. Reading these messages from other fans has me tearing up and remembering him on stage, on albums and here, online. I know that I personally have benefitted from his kind words, his broad talents and inspiration. Perhaps more so than any other musician.

The music of Pogues and the Radiators has in some ways shaped who I am and how I see the world. I credit Mr. Chevron with part of that — a part that means a great deal to me. I hope he knows how important and cherished he is by the folks on this site and across the world. All the best Philip, for a long time to come.

Have been thinking about this for the past month or so since reading the news, and I came on this morning and saw this, which pretty much wraps up my thoughts. Many folks' thoughts are with you... Thank you for giving so much.

Mr. Chevron, the time I spent being trodden on and having my ribs bruised against the rail right in front of you has always been precious to me. I've long gloried in your music, your energy, your careful attention to what you do and to the people who love listening to you. When I recognized you a couple of years ago in a London post office -- dapper and elegant in suit and hat and truly excellent shoes -- I imposed in saying hello. You immediately sat down on one of those overstuffed red couches and talked to me for half an hour about music, poetry, Yeats and Sligo, what you were working on -- and so kindly asked me about myself, and what I did. You are a gentle man, and a gentleman. Please know that you're loved and appreciated -- by the family and friends with whom you're spending these summer days, but by people you've brushed into along the way as well. With love and sincerest good thoughts from Annie

Annie, I remember you, a grand enough achievement in itself, heaven knows. Hope all's well with you. PC
