Song Of the Faithful Departed

Post Fri Apr 20, 2012 7:16 am

Phil, just a quick one to ask where on CD can I get hold of a copy of the original recording of Song of the Faithful Departed?
I have it on vinyl, on the b side of the 7" of Kitty Ricketts, but woould like it so I can listen to it now.
I know the later versions changed to a slightly more up tempo version e.g. the version on Cockles & Mussels
Help appreciated. Thanks

The original recording is the one on the album Ghostown (recorded 1978, released 1979) which is still available on the CD formats of both that album and Cockles And Mussels - the Very Best of the Radiators. The "unplugged" version on the b side of "Kitty Ricketts" was actually a much later (1979) recording but because of delays in releasing the album, it arrived in shops about a week before the official recording. We distinguished them by calling the album version "Song of the Faithful Departed" and the acoustic version "Ballad of the Faithful Departed" [a third version, "Dance of the Faithful Departed", recorded for a BBC Radio One session remains lost to posterity as the Beeb did not keep the tapes] but by the time of the Moving Hearts cover in 1981, I had requested the royalty collection agencies to also register it as "Faithful Departed", the title by which it remains best known. "Ballad of............." is on the CD Alive-Alive-O!
