New York theatre recommendations?

Post Sun Mar 09, 2008 5:05 pm

Hello Philip -

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the current Broadway offerings - I'm considering getting a ticket for a show while I'm in the city next weekend. On my list of possibilities so far: Passing Strange, The Seafarer or The Homecoming.

Thanks :)

The only one I can actually vouch for is The Seafarer, though I aim to see most of the new offerings when I go back to New York after Boston. Passing Strange is certainly on my list of shows to check out, as are In The Heights, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Gypsy, Cry Baby, A Catered Affair, The Homecoming, South Pacific, November, Come Back Little Sheba...........South Pacific has never been revived on Broadway since the original (in 1949?) so if they get it right, and work with the "you've got to be carefully taught [to hate]" elements, they may find themselves with a show that resonates for current wars and not just the Pacific war leading up to Hiroshima.

Thanks for the suggestions. So many choices! After checking what worked within my timeframe and available ticket discounts (and then still changing my mind 6 or 7 times), I got a seat for August:Osage County. It's a long one - 3 hours and 20 minutes running time.

May you enjoy your visits to the NY theatre, too!

From what I've heard, one of the more exciting shows is "The Adding Machine" at Minetta Lane. I saw it in Chicago last year and was blown away by it. And I figure any show that can get Sondheim on his feet yelling BRAVO is worth investigating.
