Waiting For Herb

James, I recently read the new Carol Clerk book about you guys, I loved you analogy of Waiting For Herb to that of Lord of the Rings. However, do you think its and I quote "a pretty crap album," because I thought your song Drunken Boat was quite a standout track from the rest. The album as a whole has started to grow on me, although it's still doesn't quite capture the magic of the MacGowan years.

Drunken Boat was an entirely wonderful experience for me to write, because I'd hardly written anything, ever, before (a couple of songs on a demo in 1979 which should never and will never see the light of day) and everyone in the group was so encouraging. But, as nice as wossname Michael Brook was, genial, mild-mannered and all, I would have preferred his treatment of the material to be less processed. I always thought that songs should be songs first and soundscapes second or third.

By the way, have you heard the version of it by George Dalaras on his record, The Running Roads? It's a hoot, but I don't think he was going for that.
