Two (actually three) questions to Mr. Fearnley

Post Thu Jan 29, 2009 8:43 am

Good Morning!

I've got two questions to Mr. James Fearnley concerning the accordion-playing in the Pogues.

Did you improvise the stuff you played on the accordion, or did you arrange it in terms of writing the notes down and playing them by reading from sheets?

As a general question to the Pogues, was it all written down, or did you play it by ear without reading the notes?

And a second question to Mr. Fearnley: Can you play the bass of the accordion? Because I think you never played them during live performances? But I think on some studio recordings I can hear the bass of the accordion (for example "Dingle Regatta" or "House of the Gods"). I suppose the bass is quite useless on live shows, because you can't hear it very good and you've got the guitar which plays the chords as well? Just wondering if that's the reason?

Oh and well a third question (I'm sorry :) ), how did and still do you manage to throw that massive accordion around? It's a great show effect, but it's quite heavy and it looks like it's nearly impossible to play at the same time. I play the accordion as well and I usually sit down because it's more comfortable and easier to use the bass. Excuse my bad english.

Thanks a lot! Cheers!

Ok, it seems the man himself is not on the board anymore. Probably somebody else (Philip Chevron ? ) can answer?

Thanks a lot anyway!

I think I've read a couple of times around here that the pogues didn't do notes from sheets. That doesn't have to mean that everything is improvised.
There are songs with bass in it. I could see how the bass would be over powered by other instruments though..
