I suppose it's like everything else, it's easy to sound ok, but very difficult to sound brilliant.

I'm finding it easier to take up than the guitar. Couldn't quite get into that darn 'strumming' thing! My hurdle on the bass at the moment is to train the 2 less dominant fingers (pinkie and the one next to it) to play there part in holding down the chords. I always wanted to play bass - since a teen - and I think that helps... to play an instrument you are naturally drawn to. The last instrument I seriously played was the coconuts in the school nativity play 26 yrs ago - so its never too late. Good luck!

bass is easier to be "ok" on...definetly. you have way less chords to remember. (yes, there are bass chords) going from playing guitar, to playing bass is pretty easy.

a couple of things to make you second guess.

it's easy to play simple punk songs, but other than that bass is hard.

 The coconuts are a very complex instrument - and also quite hard to come by - you need to go 'underground' to get them - y'know May Fairs, PTA fundraisers etc.

I guess it wouldn't take too long to learn playing along to Pogues songs, because you can work with 1-5 most of the time. And while a mediocre or bad bass player won't add much to a band, a great bassplayer can push it into the stratosphere!
But you don't have to play like James Jamerson to sound good. So I guess you could have fun with the bass after not too long a time (if you got rhythm, that is!)

The most important thing about playing bass is NOT actual techique. The ability to sync in with the drummer, to play right on the kick drum, is of great importance. I would always prefer playing with a bassist with limited "chops", but tight with the drummer, than with one of those "slap-happy - hey Mom-look-at-me" stylists any day. And Darryl definitaly fall into the category of
"in-the-pocket" bassists. A good example is "Birgingham Six" where Darryl and Andrew are just ripping up the chorus.

THAT is a rythym section at work!

Rancid "Maxwell Murder" 8)

As any instrument, it can be easy or difficult  depends on what you want to play
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

Putting aside my disdain for everything that this band has released after their very first album, I have always thought that Matt was one of the best bassist in the biz. Truely talented/gifted.
