Bass guitar

Can anyone offer any advice / tips on my impending purchase of a bass guitar? Different makes, prices, sounds (?), tab books. I set myself a goal to learn bass by the time i was 30 - well 30 has passed me by and I am still bassless. Seeing the Pogues again has renewed my vigour - as it did back in '88. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Bass has been bought! Dog not very happy about...ah well.
