Andrew and Mysterious Wheels

Post Fri Nov 23, 2007 6:04 pm

Andrew has opened up a MySpace page for his band, Mysterious Wheels:

http://www.myspace.com/andrewrankenmysteriouswheels

He's also posted Mysterious Wheels' new version of Amadie, the Ranken penned track recorded by The Pogues on the Pogue Mahone album.

From the page:
Andrew Ranken is a British drummer, best known as the percussionist for the British-Irish band The Pogues. He joined the band in 1983 and appeared on all of their recordings and tours until their breakup in 1996. He has also performed with The Pogues since their reunion in 2001. After The Pogues split up Andrew became a member of Municipal Waterboard and hKippers. The hKippers are a septet led by singer and guitarist Paul Bradley, who is an actor, probably most well-known for his role in the TV-series EastEnders. Mysterious Wheels (so named by his young son!) is different - this time Andrew leads the band on vocals , augmented by lifelong friends Tom Anthony , Joe and Simon Korner, and longstanding neighbours and friends Paul Seacroft ( http://www.myspace.com/paulseabiscuit , ex Selecter, ) and Dylan Bates(Billy Jenkins, Fleapit Orchestra, and many others).

Congratulations Andrew! Great to see the new music coming out.

The first Randall Rootz event of 2010 will see Pogues drummer Andrew Ranken perform with his band the Mysterious Wheels.

Ranken played the inaugural Randall Rootz Festival in August 2007 when he and Pogues whistle player Spider Stacey joined Peterborough’s Dead Rabbits for the opening night.

The Dead Rabbits, the UK’s only tribute band to the Pogues, performed with the famous musicians to a sold out crowd at The Brewery Tap for the festival, which was set up in memory of talented city percussionist Mark Randall who sadly died in February 2007 after a battle with cancer. The fourth Randall Rootz Festival will be held over three days in August, and aims to raise funds and awareness for the city’s Sue Ryder Care, as well as promoting music and diversity in Peterborough.

Now Ranken returns to the area for the first Randall Rootz Presents event – a series of gigs which have been organised in the run-up to this year’s festival – at the popular music venue Voodoo Lounge, in North Street, Stamford.

Michael Houlihan, part owner of Voodoo Lounge, Randall Rootz committee member and whistler player with The Dead Rabbits, said, “We’re really excited about having Andrew come to play, this time with his own band. He’s the frontman of the Mysterious Wheels, playing blues rock with a country twist. It was such an honour to be able to play with him in 2007 and I’m very grateful for the connection between The Dead Rabbits, Randall Rootz and The Pogues.”

He added: “Make sure to watch this space as we have some very interesting developments that involve members of The Pogues, Voodoo Lounge and Randall Rootz Presents in the coming months.”

Andrew Ranken and the Mysterious Wheels will play on Saturday, April 3rd

Is it correct to call it a cover?

Michael Houlihan, from the Voodoo Lounge, said: “The band played to a packed house at the venue in April this year, and it’s really exciting to be able to announce their return playing rhythm and blues and roots style blues, fronted by Ranken, clearly a fine singer and frontman in his own right.”
